The tech conference season is upon us, and in the latest episode of The Difference Engine tech Category podcast, Jonathan Simnett and I report back from two very different events - the UK’s prime tech-meets-the-government conference/exhibition - DigiGov Expo and the investment and innovation-focussed third Sifted Summit. At DigiGov, we found, amongst the frameworks and acronyms, a newly confident public sector, most of whom seemed genuinely excited about new tech including an all-pervasive AI. But can UK Government become smarter at buying tech, fostering new homegrown startups and being selective about legislation it enacts? In contrast, at Sifted Summit an air of realism pervaded around tech valuations and where the smart and Category-creating money is now going with contributions from impressive tech entrepreneurs from Starling Bank’s Anne Boden to Quench.ai’s Husayn Kassai. But why, we ask, is the commercial impact of Quantum Computing permanently 10 years hence? And with the UK budget nearly upon us whether taxation changes trailed by the new UK government in its first budget could threaten the UK’s long-held status as Europe’s leading tech hub. What’s happening: +Bitcoin mining companies, artificial intelligence startups and quantum computing ventures have been creating a recent influx of new investments into data centres globally Why it matters: +Data centres are becoming critically important as the foundational infrastructure of Bitcoin mining companies and artificial intelligence startups who require access to hosting facilities for their hardware +Cloud computing and on demand access to GPUs has also created a new paradigm for the importance of data centre facilities globally as more venture backed startups are requiring computing power Who is making moves: +Starwood Capital, one of the largest private investment companies in the United States, just announced they are launching a new venture aimed solely at new data centres called Starwood Digital Ventures +Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) just recently purchased a new data centre campus, which is powered entirely by nuclear energy +EdgeCore Digital Infrastructure recently landed debt financing to build one of the largest data centres in the United States, which will span over 3M square feet in Phoenix, Arizona +Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) recently announced a multi billion dollar deal to expand their cloud computing arm through the construction of new data centres in the United Kingdom Going deeper: +The next large catalyst for data centres beyond hosting GPUs for artificial intelligence computing power and Bitcoin mining hardware is quantum computing, which is now reaching the point of requiring data centres to host quantum computing hardware +Cybersecurity companies are also deepening their investments into data centres, with leading cybersecurity company Coro recently announcing their plans to launch new data centres in both Germany and Canada.

Nvidia Is Backing Applied Digital For Data Centre Dominance Data centre operator Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) has raised $160M USD in new funding from multiple strategic investors. The financing round was led by chip making giant NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) and prominent real estate development company Related Companies. Applied Digital is on the leading edge of building out data centre infrastructure that is purpose built for artificial intelligence workloads and is also currently in the process of constructing one of the largest data centres in the entire world.
