Public systems owe LGBTQ+ young people the supports that they need to live full, whole lives—and to have those supports codified by law. Currently, many states prioritize the values of foster parents over the identities of young people, while very few have codified requirements that center the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ young people. California is one of these states and requires for foster parents to “demonstrate an ability and willingness to meet the needs of a child, regardless of the child’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.” If foster parents are not required to meet the needs of all young people, how can all youth be guaranteed to have their needs met while they are in care? I believe it's crucial for women to feel comfortable being open about their personal lives in the workplace.
