But last night I went to an event in Dubai and I was quickly reminded of just how powerful and fun it can be. Networking isn’t just about exchanging business cards (again, do people still use cards?) it’s about building exciting connections that inspire growth and opportunity. Plus, I find it fun. Sure I have work to get done on my laptop, but the in-person events, that's what gives me fire! "He won't make it 6 weeks" That's what my ex-best mate said. I started my business with my best friend. While I was building our "empire" he was planning a future without me. I was mission obsessed. He was money obsessed. After 8 years working together, he went off with his investors, new friends and our clients. I had to start over. (What makes it worse, is that he was also my best man) I went onto LinkedIn and just shared marketing and sales advice. I trusted myself and just got on with it. I started doing online and in-person workshops. My first workshop 7 people came. Not quite the number I had hoped for. He laughed and joked about it with his new investors and friends. One of the most valuable skills I possess is bringing in new business. I find immense joy in the entire process - from the initial meeting with a potential client to the moment we establish a connection, and ultimately, witnessing their business grow and becoming there compliance partners. As most of you know in the UAE, getting business means a lot of travel, especially in my industry. That means being on the road going from meeting to meeting, spending time at signals, complicated exits, packed parking, and now the terrible heat. It does get frustrating at times. But the reward justifies the means. Genuinely helping clients to achieve their goals does feel good and gives me true satisfaction. Here are a few things I learned in my journey of getting business: Understand Your Client’s To succeed, you need to understand your client’s needs and pain points. Ask questions and listen actively. When you genuinely know what they’re looking for, you can tailor your approach and build trust. Focus on Value In a competitive market, don’t get caught up in pricing wars. Instead, highlight the unique benefits of your product or service. When clients see the value, they’re more likely to invest. Follow Up Remember, the sale doesn’t end once the contract is signed. Follow up to show you care about their experience. This opens doors for feedback and future opportunities. I ensure I meet my clients very often, out of sight is out of mind;) Keep Learning Mastering signing new business is a journey. Stay curious and keep learning through books, podcasts, and networking. When you shift your mindset from selling as a chore to viewing it as an opportunity to connect and create value, you will see real success. I hope you got some value out of my experience. "Empathy: The Silent Driver of #Communication & #Confidence Building in Networking Events" I recently had a profound experience at a networking event that showcased the transformative power of #empathy in communication. Picture this: -a room filled with ambitious entrepreneurs, -each given a strict 45 seconds to pitch their business. -time was tracked , and adherence to the protocol was paramount. A first-timer at a networking event, business owner stood up to speak, - was visibly nervous, -struggling to find his voice in front of the crowd. -was at loss of words -was very vocal about his first time attending such events -and fear of public speaking What struck me most was the organizers' response. -Instead of adhering strictly to the time constraints, -they recognized his unease and extended their support. ▶ LET ME TELL YOU HE TOOK 10MINUTES -they patiently encouraged him to complete his talk, -ensuring a safe space free from judgment or negativity. This simple act of empathy made all the difference. It allowed the newcomer to build his confidence and also demonstrated the significance of supportive communication environments. In the world of networking, where time management is king, let's not forget the invaluable role of empathy. Who loves networking? I must admit I have always had mixed feelings about networking following some early experiences where it was one sale pitch after another. Who relishes doing a 60 second elevator pitch? Whilst I know it is vital as a sole trader to get out and meet new people, I have never felt comfortable with the agenda driven approach, and my more recent experiences, and importantly the amazing people that I have met have helped me find a version that feels much more authentic. Thankfully, I don’t need to be a social butterfly that works the room. What has worked for me is to get to know one or two people at each meeting. I have been lucky to meet some very inspirational women, who not only have a great story of career reinvention to tell, but also have been very generous in their support. These sessions have become about collaboration, mentorship and support and not about finding the next lead. There is no doubt that the value I am getting will help me grow my business, but this will come through shifting the emphasis to more of a strategic than tactical approach. It might take a bit of trial and error finding the right groups, but once you get over the initial awkwardness and find your tribe, the rewards are there. Also, luckily for me, most people light up when I tell them that I have my own travel business and share their own experiences, and of course I could talk travel all day. I've seen all kinds of interactions and spoken to many people as a natural extrovert. 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘺𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵. It's also true that networking can take up a lot of time and money, especially for new businesses. Still, it has the potential for business growth by connecting with business people who can help you connect and refer you to other businesses. The key🔑 is understanding how to make the most of these events. Below are some tips, I picked up on how other businesses might recommend you. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞: Focus on making genuine connections, although that might appear difficult at first. Let others sense you are genuinely interested in people and their businesses and willing to learn how they serve their clients. 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲: For example; "What makes your business successful?" "Did you experience any challenges in the early part of your business?" "How did you manage to overcome those business challenges?" Also, share how and if your product or service could be valuable to them or someone they know. 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤: Don’t be afraid to ask, “What do you think about my product or service?” This will start meaningful conversations and help you understand how to present yourself as a solution to their problems. 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞: Happy customers are your best source of new business. Setting up a formal referral program can also motivate clients to tell others about your business.
