Friday musings on NHS cost-reduction targets, from the outside, looking in. 1) Reduction in overall temporary staffing cost 2) Reduction in agency spend and usage How interchangeable, practically and economically, are these two targets? Is the NHS going to pull different levers in the coming months to find a sweet spot between bank rates and the bank : agency ratio, now agency cost/hr has been brought into line against framework caps. When you increase bank rates against a large number of nurses, does the resulting impact on agency spend make it worthwhile? Especially when you consider the direct and indirect overheads of internally managing a workforce. Why ask? I was informed yesterday that one Trust in England, upon recently reviewing its internal temporary staffing costs more holistically (against target 1), made the decision to move spend away from their bank and onto agency for a specific project. The agency contract was shown to be more cost efficient when all overheads were considered. Directives have, understandably, been driven by agency spend reduction and moving candidates to bank over recent years; particularly the last 12 months. The factor of control has to be considered alongside purely economic targets. However, with average agency cost now strongly regulated, is it time to reframe those targets into one more holistic aim? Can agencies like Candy Healthcare, set for the coming decade and driving technological and internal efficiencies across the temporary staffing function, provide value when positioned at a target % of a Trust's temporary staffing budget? March: 24-hour walkout. April: 72-hour walkout. May: 120-hour walkout. Teeside Healthcare assistants are on strike for the 3rd time in 3 months. On Monday, hundreds of workers walked out. Why? ⤵️ Because of an ongoing dispute over pay. Unison Northern regional secretary Clare Williams said: "Hundreds of low-paid workers, mainly women, are being denied money they’re owed. Staff feel hurt that their employers have little interest in settling this dispute.” As someone in the healthcare industry, it’s becoming frustrating to see people repeatedly not being heard. - Care assistants are the backbone of our healthcare system. - Providing essential support & care to patients every day. - Their work is demanding.
