Stanford Medicine researchers are using virtual reality to aid those with hoarding disorder. With a virtual home environment, individuals can practice letting go of possessions, easing real-life discarding. Symptoms affect 2-6% of the population, with older adults being more susceptible. The VR sessions, coupled with online therapy, showed promising results in a pilot study, with 7 out of 9 participants showing improvement. As technology evolves, this approach could complement existing therapies for hoarding disorder. This isn't just a personal health issue - it's a significant public health concern that impacts our healthcare system, economy and wider society. The economic burden is staggering, with an estimated 4.6 million GP appointments annually linked to chronic pain costing the NHS about £69 million each year, not to mention the broader impact on productivity and quality of life. Addressing chronic pain effectively requires GPs to better understand the condition which is why we've developed an interactive 360 VR training module to do just this. This innovative approach helps doctors experience and empathise with the patient’s perspective, leading to more effective and personalised treatment strategies. September is designated Pain Awareness Month. The annual campaign is centered around raising awareness of issues regarding pain and pain management. Our Chief Equity Officer Aubrey J. Grant M.D. FACC presented Equity Commons’ new “Jim & Harper Adverse Outcomes” Virtual Reality (VR) module as a part of the Pri-Med East Annual Conference in Providence, Rhode Island on September 13th. This module highlights challenges faced by rural Americans suffering from chronic pain, showing how both Jim, a blue-collar worker in rural America, and his partner, Harper, are affected by the bias Jim faces when he is prescribed opioids for his chronic pain. During Dr. Aubrey J. Grant’s presentation, he unpacked the bias depicted in the VR module and best practices for healthcare providers to mitigate this bias. As we wrap up the month of September, it is important to highlight the ways we can mitigate bias towards patients with chronic pain and ensure all patients receive the high quality care they need. #SolvePainTogether #Bias #PainManagement
