I absolutely love this crossroads between technology and organizing! I will definitely be following up on the studies using VR to help hoarders. One of the main purposes is to remove the person from all the sensations associated with their belongings such as familiar and comforting smells. Removing any emotional triggers can allow people to see their belongings in a more objective manner. Stanford Medicine researchers are using virtual reality to aid those with hoarding disorder. With a virtual home environment, individuals can practice letting go of possessions, easing real-life discarding. Symptoms affect 2-6% of the population, with older adults being more susceptible. The VR sessions, coupled with online therapy, showed promising results in a pilot study, with 7 out of 9 participants showing improvement. As technology evolves, this approach could complement existing therapies for hoarding disorder.
