🔵 Project BlueSky 🔵 is an initiative at the U.S. Energy Information Administration to develop a next generation energy systems model, which will eventually be used to produce our long-term outlooks.  To effectively address emerging energy issues, we are designing the next generation model to be modular, flexible, transparent, and robust. We've just released an open source prototype on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. The BlueSky Prototype is the first step towards creating this next generation model. The prototype offers the modeling community an early opportunity to experiment with the new framework and provide feedback. Feedback gathered from stakeholders will be used to develop a full-scale version of the model beginning in 2025. Every country needs its own energy system modeling, like Project BlueSky. Too often, policies stem from popular discussions rather than grounded, data-driven insights. How can we genuinely forecast energy needs without robust energy system models? Whether for large or small nations, R&D in energy modeling is crucial. 📃Scientific paper: Coordinated Expansion Planning of Transmission and Distribution Systems Integrated with Smart Grid Technologies Abstract: Integration of smart grid technologies in distribution systems, particularly behind-the-meter initiatives, has a direct impact on transmission network planning. This paper develops a coordinated expansion planning of transmission and active distribution systems via a stochastic multistage mathematical programming model. In the transmission level, in addition to lines, sitting and sizing of utility-scale battery energy storage systems and wind power plants under renewable portfolio standard policy are planned. Switchable feeders and distributed generations are decision variables in the distribution level while the impact of demand response programs as a sort of behind-the-meter technologies is accommodated as well. Expansion of electric vehicle taxi charging stations is included as a feasible option in both transmission and distribution levels. In order to deal with short-term uncertainty of load demand, renewable energy sources output power, and the charging pattern of electric vehicle taxis in each station, a chronological time-period clustering algorithm along with Monte Carlo simulation is utilized. The proposed model is tackled by means of Benders Dual Decomposition (BDD) method. The IEEE RTS test system (as the transmission system) along with four IEEE 33-node test feeders (as distribution test systems) are examined to validate effectiveness of the proposed model. EDIBON's Computer Controlled Geothermal (low enthalpy) Energy Unit, "EG5C", consists of a cooling circuit, a small tank with pipes covered with water (bath) and a chilling unit (heat pump). The cooling circuit consists of a compressor, an air condenser/evaporator, and two water condensers/evaporators. The reason is that the unit has a 4-way valve that can detect if it is summer or winter by the environmental conditions. According to this, it sends the refrigerant gas to one or another exchanger. So they can work as evaporators or condensers of the refrigerant liquid. The ground is simulated using a small tank that covers some pipes and a heat pump. The water of the tank is at a constant temperature, the same temperature that the earth has at 20 m of depth (15ºC [59ºF] approximately). This water goes to a bath, heating or cooling the water that flows through the pipes immersed in the bath. Finally, there is a tank to store the water heated by the unit. It simulates the sanitary hot water of a house. The unit has a cycle inversion valve, which can simulate winter and summer conditions, as it was mentioned before. Since the temperature of the earth at 20 m of depth is always 15ºC, this temperature will be higher than the environmental temperature in winter, therefore, the ground is used to heat (heating mode use). However, the environmental temperature in summer will be higher than 15ºC,so the ground’s water will be used to cool (refrigerating mode). This Computer Controlled Unit is supplied with the EDIBON Computer Control System (SCADA), and includes The unit itself + a Control Interface Box + a Data Acquisition Board + Computer Control, Data Acquisition and Data Management Software Packages, for controlling the process and all parameters involved in the process.

I am thrilled to share that I have successfully completed my PhD with the dissertation titled "Consensus-Based Wide Area Cooperative Protection in Transmission Grid" as of September 8, 2024. This journey has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I’m excited to take this knowledge forward into the field of power engineering. Along the way, I had the privilege of publishing three papers in the IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution journal, focused on innovative protection strategies for transmission grids: "Dynamic Wide-Area Cooperative Protection: A New Approach" "A New Virtual Consensus-Based Wide Area Differential Protection" "Enhancing distance protection in transmission grids with high penetration of renewable energy sources through cooperative protection", which was just published today! This latest article tackles the growing challenges posed by renewable energy sources (RES) and inverter-based resources (IBRs) in transmission grids. It introduces a global consensus algorithm for cooperative protection, with simulations carried out using #MATLAB and #DIgSILENT #PowerFactory. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my doctoral supervisor, Professor Seyed Abbas Taher, for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this journey. Dynamic Boundaries is a concept that allows microgrids to change their configuration to optimize the use of renewable energy sources. This is done by reducing curtailment and maximizing the load served, while also minimizing phase loading imbalances. Such imbalances can sometimes cause commercial grid-forming sources to trip offline, compromising the microgrid's resilience. This paper introduces optimal dispatch strategies for controllable switches and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) within the microgrid. The objective is to regulate negative sequence voltage and enhance the utilization of renewable energy, thereby improving both the stability and efficiency of the microgrid.
