You have to pay attention to what your members are saying. It can be by actively asking them for feedback. Sending them surveys. All that. And also by passively listening. What are they talking about with other members? What struggles are they going through? What do they need? You cannot force it. It has to be natural. Then and only then, your member will engage more and more. By themselves. Because they want to. When Candidates Back Out: A Recruiter's Survival Guide 🎯 You’re this close to making the perfect hire, ready to hit “placement achieved” and celebrate… and then: 💌 “After careful consideration, I’ve decided to stay where I am.” Poof! Gone like your weekend plans during peak hiring season. Let’s turn that heartbreak into hilarity with these tips (and a few GIF-worthy moments)! 🎢 1. Play Therapist 🛋️ When they start sounding like a breakup text, “It’s not you, it’s me,” dig deeper. Sometimes it’s cold feet; sometimes it’s the mystical allure of their old office snacks. 🍪 💡 Tip: Ask open-ended questions and be their career coach, not just their recruiter. A little empathy goes a long way! 2. Ghostbusters 👻 Candidates ghosting is the recruitment version of The Twilight Zone. If your follow-ups are as dry as last year’s memes, they’ll vanish. ✨ Solution: Stay on their radar with updates, check-ins, and the occasional job-related meme or funny GIF. They’ll love the attention (without the clingy vibes). 3. Counteroffer Chronicles 💼💔 “I’m committed,” they say. Then their boss swoops in with promises of raises, better coffee, and flexible Fridays. 😒 📢 Pro Tip: Prepare them for this moment: “Remember why you wanted to leave in the first place!” Sometimes, it works. Other times… well, there’s wine for that. 🍷 4. Always Have a Plan B 🗂️ Life lesson: Never put all your eggs in one candidate basket. 🥚 → 💥 Keep a backup list, because when Candidate A backs out, Candidate B might just be the one. 🦸♀️ 5. Legal Love Letters ✍️ Throw in a little fine print magic. A returnable signing bonus or notice period clarity can work wonders. 🚨 Worst case: They still back out, but now you have a story to laugh about with your team (after you cry). 6. According to writer Aki Ito at Business Insider in a late July article titled "GenZ Strikes Back" early careers students are still reneging their offers, at a percentage higher than even in 2021 (according to Veris Insights data). Still in 2024, there seems to be a lot of fear on both the candidate and employer side when it comes to giving out and accepting offers - employers over-hiring to reduce the impact of reneges given the reality of the candidates' behavior, and candidates accepting multiple job offers, then choosing the best fit for them once its closer to start time.
