About two weeks ago, I attended the National Society of Black Engineers 2024 national convention with a goal to interact with seasoned professionals, learn from global leaders and immerse in an atmosphere of winners. As I was not job-hunting, I had the opportunity to attend many seminars/ workshop sessions, some of which include: • Unwritten rules of Corporate America • How AI will impact the workforce • Leading with Purpose • Navigating our way to Technical Leadership • There’s no traffic when you create your own lane These were inspiring sessions, not just due to the information shared, but due to the quality of people and mindsets I shared the room with. Amongst the many treasures I gained from the NSBE convention was the statement “Take the hard assignments”. I heard a senior vice president say it, I heard a director say it, I heard a chief engineer say it, I heard a mid-career engineer say it. It dawned on me, more than ever before, that the surest path to career growth and success is by constantly challenging yourself and picking up those projects that majority will run from. The NSBE National convention, which attracted over 15000 students and professionals is more than a platform to land your dream job. It is also a convergence of winners and world changers to encourage one another, sharpen skillsets, learn and grow in various facets for continued impact. Truly, we grow ourselves to grow others.

As we prepare for the JWI 2024 Graduation, we’re excited to take this opportunity to spotlight our remarkable Fellows and our Board of Directors over the coming weeks. Introducing one of our very own Board members at JWI, Chuks Ezeokafor, MBA, MSc, C.Dir.! In addition to serving on our Board and being a Fellow of the JWI Directors Program, Chuks holds positions on several other boards, including Sheridan College, the Ontario Science Centre, and COSTI Immigrant Services. He also serves as Vice President of IT at Levitt-Safety Ltd. We asked Chuks a few questions about his experience with JWI, and here’s what he shared: Why did you decide to join the John Ware Institute? "As a current Director on Canadian Crown Corporation Boards, I see the value diverse voices bring to governance. There's a perception that the pool of qualified and experienced Black Directors for Canadian corporate boards is limited. I joined John Ware to fix the diverse candidate supply problem by sponsoring world-class governance education and creating opportunities for black Canadians to serve on boards, equipping them to contribute at all levels, including the TSX 60." What has been the most significant impact or change since joining? "Since joining JWI, the most significant impact has been witnessing firsthand the power of opportunity. Being part of an organization that fosters world-class governance education and actively creates pathways for Black Canadians to serve on corporate boards has been transformative. I've seen how providing access to these roles can unlock untapped potential, and the talent and insights brought forward by our Fellows are awe-inspiring. It has reaffirmed that, while education is crucial, creating spaces for these leaders to contribute is the real game-changer." What message or advice would you give to someone considering joining the Institute? "Apply. Persevere. Perform. Becoming a John Ware Fellow can significantly shape your career and leadership journey. Be ready to challenge yourself, stay committed, and showcase your abilities. The rewards of perseverance and excellence in this program are immense—not just for your personal growth, but for your broader contributions to governance."
