There are many reasons why you should consider moving jobs if you have been with your current employer for 4 years+ but sometimes the feeling of loyalty or commitment can make you feel like you ‘should stay’. One of the main ones is highlighted below. You are an amazing QS slowly developing through the business. Strange bit is not only are you expected to do your job, manage clients, manage assistants, deliver projects and bring in 2.5x salary…..a few other jobs have creeped in. You now seem to be the ‘go to’ for IT problems. You seem to also be responsible for always cleaning the office kitchen. That one problem client that is a bit of a pain “only wants to deal with you” which takes away at least 2 hours a week of your time even though your not managing his projects. Also the 3 APC candidates that are sitting there exam in November seem to be coming to you for advice because one of the partners keeps telling everyone that “you only sat it last year and are sure you will be happy to help out”. Suddenly you realise 5-10 hours a week are jobs that don’t benefit you OR your career - I am sure you get the picture. Over time lots of jobs ‘seem’ to become part of your role. Two decades ago, I embarked on a journey with a new company, stepping into the roles of receptionist and secretary. Our workspace allowed us a view of the reception area across us, setting the stage for a moment that would unknowingly steer my career trajectory. One day, the company’s owner and director, while in our area for a discussion, subtly pointed out how the receptionist opposite us was tidying up the office. It was a gentle hint that he expected similar actions from me. Without a response, I took this observation not as a directive, but as a catalyst for self-growth. My initial reluctance to simply meet the expected norms turned into a journey of self-empowerment and broadened horizons. In under a year, my role evolved significantly, entrusting me with the authority to sign on behalf of the company, barring bank instruments and legal documents. This was a clear deviation from the owner’s initial expectations, which were uniform for anyone in my position. Yet, through self-driven learning and development, I charted a unique path. By the time I moved on, I had contributed to product development, training, recruitment, and market research—far beyond the confines of my original job description. This experience taught me valuable lessons: Observe and Reflect: Use observations about others’ expectations to reflect on your own growth paths, not just to conform. Self-Development: Invest in your learning and skills. The effort you put into developing yourself can redefine your role and value in unexpected ways. Silent Advocacy: Actions speak volumes. By expanding your competencies, you advocate for your capabilities and potential. Empower Through Autonomy: Gaining authority or autonomy is not just about climbing the ladder; it’s about proving your worth and the unique contributions you can make.
