Cornell researchers have developed a wristband device that continuously detects hand positioning and objects the hand interacts with using AI-powered, inaudible soundwaves. Potential applications include tracking hand positions for virtual reality (VR) systems, controlling smartphones and other devices with hand gestures, and understanding a user’s activities; for example, a cooking app could narrate a recipe as the user chops, measures and stirs. The Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, presented new augmented reality glasses at the company’s annual developer conference, debuting a prototype of the next phase in its expansion into smart eyewear - Orion. Meta believes eyewear will eventually replace smartphones, even though the production cost of the current prototype is approximately $10000. Meta also introduced Quest 3S, the latest mixed reality headsets, starting at $300. “This is the physical world with holograms overlaid on it.”, claimed Mark. Meta’s metaverse unit - Reality Labs, lost $8.3B in the first half of this year and $16B last year.   As the current generation of large language models runs out of digital data to ingest and train on, we will likely see an explosion in the wearables category, which can provide crucial sensory data on how humans navigate the physical world.
