🚀The 2024 State of the Energy Union report reveals the EU's progress and challenges in energy and climate transition. Under the European Green Deal, ambitious policies are set for climate neutrality by 2050, with 2030 targets like a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. 🌞Renewable energy is on the rise. In 2023, a record 56 GW of new solar capacity was installed, and wind energy has become the second-largest electricity source, surpassing gas. The EU is making great strides in clean energy. 🛡️Additionally, between August 2022 and May 2024, the EU reduced gas demand by 18%, saving 138 billion cubic meters. But more effort is needed to meet 2030 energy efficiency goals. 🌍The EU is a global climate leader. It's actively involved in international efforts such as the Global Methane Pledge. The wind and solar power capacities in the EU have seen a substantial rise in recent years, expanding by about two-thirds, a findings from a recent analysis conducted by the think tank Ember. Between 2019 to 2023, these capacities grew by 65%, with Germany taking the lead among the member states. In 2023, governments around the world spent over $600 billion subsidising the consumption of fossil fuels. Subsidies for clean energy consumption was only 1/10th of that number. Of the fossil fuel subsidies for households (for residential and transport purposes), the poorest 20% of the households got only 10% of the total fossil fuel subsidies. Meanwhile the richest 30% of households received half of these fossil fuel subsidies. At COP28, around 200 countries agreed to a few key energy transition goals, including: - Triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 - Double rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030 - Transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems - Phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies The full IEA report exploring these can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eSyCS4T4

⚡🗼Alina Arsani, EPG Head of Energy Systems, and Andrei Covatariu, EPG Senior Associate, contributed to Romania's section of the newly realeased Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe report on future proofing CEE’s grids, a topic that is of high interest for EPG. The energy system's decarbonisation is impossible to achieve without grid investments. 🗨️Alina Arsani: Grids play a key role in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries' pathways to decarbonisation. Reaching national climate goals also means expanding and modernising the power grids - a prerequisite for integrating renewable sources. The Federal Cabinet has adopted the updated National Energy and Climate Plan #NECP for Germany 🇩🇪, marking progress toward achieving the country’s climate targets. Aligning with EU 🇪🇺 targets, the update ensures that by 2030, renewable energy will cover 80% of gross electricity consumption.
