New policy study published! https://lnkd.in/eAijkwqf The beginning of the new EU mandate means the closure of a very productive legislature in the digital domain. Now is time to build Europe’s digital ecosystem. In the study: ◼️ Francesca Bria makes a plea for a European Digital Industrial Policy, which can stimulate the creation of a EuroStack, ◼️ Johnny Ryan highlights the need for effective enforcement of existing rules, ◼️ Sophie Bloemen explains why and how digital public infrastructure should be governed as digital commons, ◼️ Leevi Saari looks at market concentration in the current AI landscape, ◼️ Fabian Ferrari argues that the EU needs a strategic overhaul that links public investment in AI to beneficial societal goals, ◼️ Matthias Pfeffer illustrates the urgency of European capacity building in the digital media domain and proposes a trustworthy information platform, ◼️ Annarosa Pesole discusses the impact of AI and algorithmic management on workers.

🤔 “How to involve citizens & #CivilSociety in the global governance of #AI?” Yesterday was the third and final day of our #AIDialogues series. To discuss this pressing issue, we gathered at Sciences Po, with 15+ multidisciplinary experts (academics, representatives of government bodies, tech companies, and civil society) from France and abroad. Here are some of the questions we addressed: ➡ How can civil society get involved in the various “spaces” where and moments when AI governance takes place (ethical codes, domestic regulations, standardisation bodies, industry self-governance, contracts and licensing, international agreements, events…)? ➡ What challenges does it face in doing so, and what are some ways they could be overcome? ➡ How to build bridges between the various levels of civil society participation (local, national, supranational, global…)? Stay tuned for our answers, which will be published soon in the final report of our “AI Dialogues” series! A big thank you to Rayna Stamboliyska, Giulio Coppi (Access Now), Margot Godefroi (Conseil National du Numerique (CNNum)), Pierre NORO, Penelope Liot (beta.gouv.fr), Yves Mathieu, Leda Kuneva (Clever Together Futureproof), Alain Strowel, Gladys O. Yiadom, Sarah Nicole (Project Liberty), Marc Faddoul (AI Forensics), Sarah Boiteux (Google), Sarah Cledy (Google) and Elvire François (方艾文) (Microsoft), for joining the discussion, and to Théophile Lenoir for moderating the session! 🙏 This project wouldn’t have been possible without our esteemed partners: Banque des Territoires, Docaposte, Google France, Microsoft France, Kaspersky France and North, West & Central Africa, the Digital Law Center - University of Geneva, HEAD – Genève, University of Art and Design, the MIAI Cluster IA, Sciences Po’s Technology & Global Affairs Innovation Hub, the AI&Society Institute, UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain, Télécom Paris, and Institut Polytechnique de Paris. With special thanks to Constance de Leusse and Pierre NORO for making us feel at home! More about the AI Dialogues: https://lnkd.in/eTPbxbrb

Later this week, officials from 9 countries and those from the EU gather in San Francisco for a two-day summit. The topic: AI Safety The aim is to figure out how all these countries' so-called AI Safety Institutes can work together on thorny (read: wonky) topics like how to measure risks linked to the latest AI models and how to standardize oversight of this emerging technology. "AI safety institutes are so critical to advancing this measurement science for trustworthy systems," Natasha Crampton, Microsoft's chief responsible AI officer, told me earlier this year. Yet beyond the photo ops and working groups this week in California, trickier political problems lie ahead. It's not clear if the incoming Donald Trump administration will even keep the US AI Safety Institute going. The EU's AI Office needs to hire quickly and help implement the bloc's new AI legislation. The UK's separate AI Safety Institute is overly fixated on so-called 'existential risk.' Separate AI governance efforts are happening across the G7, G20, African Union, United Nations (in multiple agencies), the OECD - OCDE and the Council of Europe, to name just a few. In this week's Digital Politics newsletter, I outline what to expect from this week (not much), and what to look out for as national governments try to both shore up these domestic agencies and create common goals that span international borders 👇

AI regulation is a growing topic, stimulated by the implementation of new regulatory texts in Europe such as the DSA, DMA and AIA. Prophets and doomsayers speak out a lot on these subjects, adding noise to opacity. But how can scientists contribute to this regulation? What kind of dialogue is taking place, and what challenges will we have to face together to efficiently protect citizens, the economic fabric and innovation? Inria is pleased to invite you to the conference "Digital Regulation : the Contribution of Science" on Monday, October 21st, 2024, 9.30am-1.30pm at Maison Irène et Frédéric Joliot Curie, Rue du Trône 100 - 1050 Brussels Join us for this half day proposing an in-depth and multidisciplinary dialogue on digital regulation issues. We will mobilize experts to discuss the diversity of scientific approaches and the need to develop in Europe a high level of expertise and ad hoc technological tools to be able to apply digital regulations. Thank you for your exciting contributions Oana Goga Nataliia Bielova Stephan Lewandowsky Jean Michel Loubes Debabrota Basu Erwan Le Merrer. And thank you Luca Aguzzoni for helping us introduce this dialogue. Concluding roundtable on future challenges and perspectives for closer collaboration between regulators and scientists including notably Luca Aguzzoni (DG CNECT, European Commission), Stephan Lewandowsky (University of Bristol), Erwan Le Merrer (Inria) and Camilla Penzo (PEReN), moderated by yours truly. We need more evaluators which has direct impact on the quality of assessment but also indirect back home on understanding and ameliorating national R&I evaluation practices:) So let’s go:)
Are you ready to shape the future of Artificial Intelligence in Europe? Since 2014, we’ve managed over 1,000 research projects and allocated more than €1.7 billion in EU funding under #H2020 and #HorizonEU. And as #ArtificialIntelligence continues to reshape our world, we're looking for experts to help us evaluate the research proposals we receive that have an #AI component. Some recent examples of projects in our portfolio feed into the ethical questions and challenges identified by the EU’s #AIAct: health, environmental protection, democracy, security, education, and creating a set of best practices in AI-related research. Ready to make your mark on the AI landscape? Explore opportunities to contribute to and learn more at: europa.eu/!mRBWjy
