JUST ANNOUNCED FROM #G20: A group of public and private sector leaders, including Conservation International, launch the Brazil Restoration & Bioeconomy Finance Coalition (BRB Finance Coalition) to accelerate the conservation and restoration of Brazil’s forests, with a targeted investment of at least $10 billion by 2030. The Coalition expects to support projects with the aim of conserving and restoring at least 5 million hectares of Brazilian forests, contributing to Brazil's efforts to halt and reverse deforestation. Goals also include launching projects by 2030 that will help to sequester at least 1 gigaton of CO2 & investing $500 million in initiatives benefiting Indigenous Peoples and local communities, with a focus on the vital Amazon region. “The Amazon functions as our planet’s central nervous system — regulating global weather patterns, impacting the supply of food and freshwater, and safeguarding an extraordinary diversity of life on Earth. Protecting its health is protecting our own…The future of our economies, our communities, & our planet depend on initiatives like this. [NEWS] This week the European Economic and Social Committee has approved the 2023 Strategic #Foresight #Report on Sustainability and people's wellbeing at the heart of Europe's Open Strategic Autonomy ✅📄 On the EU Commission's initiative, the report identified 10 keys strategic actions for EU, including: ▶ Moving towards a ‘Europe of investments’ by increasing private financial flows in support of strategic investments for transitions. ▶ Supporting the shift of production and consumption towards sustainability in order to decarbonise and depollute the economy, in particular industrial processes and energy-intensive sectors, reduce impacts on biodiversity, and minimise the ecological footprint of consumption. Brazil and France have announced a joint investment plan worth 1 billion euros over the next four years, which will be aimed at protecting the Amazon rainforest, developing the bioeconomy, creating a carbon market, and supporting indigenous communities. As the second week of #COP16 kicks off, I'm happy to share my latest UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) working paper with João Pedro Braga: “A just transition for the Amazon: A mission-oriented framework”.     The Amazon Rainforest plays a crucial role in global sustainability due to its unparalleled socio-biodiversity and role in climate regulation. But deforestation, illegal mining, unregulated agriculture and other challenges threaten both its ecosystems and the well-being of its peoples. This working paper presents a framework for addressing the Pan-Amazon’s interconnected challenges and for realising its economic potential in a way that benefits the planet and the people living in the region.     It draws on my past work to propose a mission-oriented approach to turn the region’s challenges into opportunities for innovation and investment, implemented according to the principles of the common good to align all stakeholders, including local communities, around shared goals and that produce shared value.     We explore what would be needed to advance a new development pathway in the region that prioritises ecological preservation and justice for local populations.     Read the report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/emMSKzGR

Today Enrique Peñaranda and I had some encouraging discussions about financing biodiversity and ecosystem services on COP16 Colombia. One of the questions that I have been asking myself for some time is: How can we mobilize private capital on a larger scale? ⬇ One possibility (and certainly an important part) is regulation, which forms the basis for a market and a price mechanism like in the carbon market. However, regulatory gaps and lengthy, international bargaining over regulations in the latter still exist, leading to greenwashing and a resulting loss of trust. As a result, the growth in investments is too slow – and there is no positive story with which to generate enthusiasm. Hardly anyone is doing it out of conviction, but rather because it is a necessary evil. 🌱 Until now, I had the impression that the situation was even more complicated when it came to biodiversity. But today, e.g. in conversation with Prof. Dr. Martin R. Stuchtey, a new perspective and a great opportunity became clearer to me: In contrary to the abstract, non-tangible carbon product, which is focussed on reduction without any prospering perspective, biodiversity has an inherent, tangible value. Emotional (everyone likes to be in nature) and economic (more and more players are realizing how much business success depends on ecosystem services). Nature is tangible or can be made tangible. This allowes for a positive, engaging narrative and an economic value. It has the potential to attract the investing community regardless of regulation. 🚀 Whats still missing so far are fiel-tested, scalable financial mechanism - but some promissing pilot projects are in the starting blocks - ready to begin! We may have the knowledge and skills. But, it gets way more impactful with open-access tools and data, such as Landsat, Sentinel, Planet, etc. Data/technology-sharing and transparency: two impactful recipes.

According to a World Economic Forum’s New Nature Economy report, embracing nature-positive transitions in key socio-economic systems could unlock $10.1 trillion in business opportunities by 2030. The global ambition to achieve a nature-positive status by 2030 requires the current decline in biodiversity to be reversed, not just halted. Dimitri de Boer, Regional Director, Asia and Chief Representative of our Beijing Office said “For businesses and financial institutions to make a full assessment of nature impacts and dependencies is important but takes time. Nature loss must be urgently reversed, so a practical step is to identify what are likely to be the two or three greatest impacts, and consider options for mitigating those” Several strategies could help realize the potential of the nature-positive transition, including collaboration, regulatory and policy support, increasing investment in nature-based solutions and enhancing data quality and transparency in supply chains.
