I was recording videos this morning for the Voices of Impact Speaker Series I'm hosting this fall. I noticed myself becoming amazed at how much I know about all the different types of stages, how you research opportunities, how you present yourself, and negotiate for value exchange. For example: 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 "TRIBE" 𝐚𝐧𝐝 "COMMUNITY." Your "tribe" are the relationships you are building that have the characteristics to become a client. Your "Community" are those that may one day be a client, or they are very important to your industry and you build relationships with them to create your referral network. These stages you do not negotiate to be paid from. Instead, you negotiate to build relationships! If the average number of touches for someone to become your client is 8, then the more you can get in front of a "hot" audience, the better! You 𝐠𝐢𝐟𝐭 your speaking to that event planner or company, build long-term relationships with them, and help them become even more phenomenal at what they do to serve the audience you know so well. You become their strongest ally and fan! 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘯𝘰𝘰𝘱 𝘋𝘰𝘨𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘖𝘭𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘴! Most speakers select 1 of 3 markets to target: Corporate, Public or Association. Some topics only lend themselves to certain markets, others span the spectrum, which is the case for me as a speaker on mental toughness. In professional speaking, we define the market by who pays the fee. Since most associations demand a steep discount, (30-40%) I avoided them and focused on Fortune 500 sales teams and public market seminars/ workshops.
