The cycles we often go through: 'That looks interesting' ➡️ 'Yay! That looks really awesome, I want it!!!' ➡️ 'Book!' ➡️ Scribble in your diary ➡️ Get more and more excited as it's nearing ➡️ Get cold feet: 'Man, what was I thinking?! I won't fit in!' ➡️ 'I'm not going' ➡️ 'But I know I'll regret if I don't' ➡️ Half of me is excited beyond what words can describe, while another half is dreading it to no end ➡️ 'Imagine how much learning can happen there! Imagine stepping over the fear and your brain rewiring to build new, experientially-proven knowing that you can' ➡️ 'Yay! Let's go! I cannot wait!' ➡️ 'Sh!t, what am I gonna wear?! 😬' ➡️ 'I have nothing of value to offer to the conversation' ➡️ 'Who am I kidding?! I'm not going' ➡️ 'C'mon, don't be daft' ➡️ 'C'mon, stop calling yourself names. You know very well you're not being daft; you know exactly the physiological manifestations of readying yourself to step out of your comfort zone' ➡️ 'You'd done it before, plenty of times; you love the adrenaline and the resulting experience' ➡️ 'Yeah, but maybe this time I am really overshooting?!' ➡️ Professional Speaking Association: 'Yo! You're first-timer? Do you want a buddy?' ➡️ 'Yes, please! What a cool idea!' ➡️ Professional Speaking Association: 'There you go' ➡️ 'Thank you! This is awesome! How did you even think of that?!' ➡️ 'We've all been first-timers once 🤷♀️' ➡️ 'It will be awesome, I cannot wait!' ➡️ 'Also, I know I have much value to bring; I just need to bring it.' ➡️ 'Right, what am I gonna wear then?' Sometimes (often, actually), self-leadership doesn't want to go it alone. Sometimes, when we surround ourselves with the right people, self-leadership DOESN'T HAVE TO go it alone. Are you part of something that makes you a better you? I joined the Professional Speaking Association 4 years ago. The first conference blew me away and I have been every year since. This year I am going to be playing a more active part delivering a session on the middle day. But the thing I am most looking forward to is meeting up with the colleagues and many friends I have made through my membership. When we are part of something, we feel more confident, we grow and as a result #anxiety reduces. Unlike the first time where I did feel nervous because everything was new, this time, I will enjoy the hugs, the catch ups and the fun and games - and will be speaking. When we keep stepping out the comfort zone, it becomes a bigger comfort zone! If you are like me 4 years ago, and thinking about speaking, or perhaps dabbling in it but anxiety is stopping you from jumping in with both feet, then know that in a short period of time, attendance at this event could mean that speaking is something you are fully comfortable with.
