Every year, I run a comprehensive study into #mentalhealth and #freelancing in the UK. The survey is open now, and I'm calling upon all freelancers to take part. Not only will sharing your experience help shine a light on where the support gaps and challenges in freelancing lie, it's also a useful reflection on your past 12 months, to highlight things to be aware of for next year. The survey is anonymous, and we publish the aggregated results in the new year (you can see all the previous years research on the link too). The freelance community is a wonderful, warm place. There are so many supportive people who are freelancers and without knowing there are like-minded people out there it would be a lot harder. Because it’s not really easy. It’s flipping exhausting at times. Imagine being in a relationship where you had to try and renew your partner’s commitment every few months. Or asking them for affection without making it look like you’re actually desperate for their affection. (And here affection = work. Because as a freelancer, I see being given work as a sign of affection. Not really. But sometimes.) This survey by Matthew Knight is something I did last night because, for all the highs and joys of the freelance opportunities; it can sometimes hammer your mental health too. It will be the 5th edition of this study, and I am curious to see results and compare. I have participated, and taking this survey also helped me to reflect on how this year has been for me and my work. This research goes to inform the work Leapers Co. do, and so far has helped over 250,000 freelancers. This important work shines a light on the gaps and challenges freelancers face, and helps the freelancing economy better understand how they can provide support. If I wake you up from sleep and ask you to do it? Can you? . . Effortlessly. Can you? What is that one thing you can effortlessly do? People struggle with that thing, but you don't. . . You have a voice that captivates when you answer the phone? You pose for pictures effortlessly and gets great shots? You're quiet? You're entropically lively? You listen so well and can talk calmly even in anger-filled surging air? You know how to combine colours? You have a heartwarming sweet smile that makes the eyes lit? You can convince someone in very short sentences? You can sell without without your tone screaming sales? You can narrate something vividly that a listener feels the scene? You talk less? You talk more? You're camera-bold? . . . Even if it's perceived to be a bad compliment such as: You're stubborn. Yas! That's good! Just recall how your coconut head has saved you from making some life mistakes! Your stubbornness has made you stick to something you know is the best! OR Someone has said "You post too much! That's good too. You know why? If e easy, make he/she run am! For that person to know it's too much, it means his/her attention was consistently drawn. Attention is currency right now, you know?
