**Call for papers: the political economy of democratic innovations** Through our work with INSPIRE, Adrian Bua, Oliver Escobar and I are excited to propose this panel on the political economy of democratic innovations for the ECPR General Conference 2025. We are interested in work that critically examine how democratic innovations both reflect and reconfigure socioeconomic realities, encouraging papers that explore the ways in which they interact with social power structures, state institutions, and collective agency. In the paper we trace the past, present and emerging future to systems of governance, looking at the changing sociopolitical context as we move into a network society and the institutional reconfigurations required for political organizations to survive and thrive within this context. In this paper, we trace the past present and future of sociopolitical systems in an attempt to answer this question. We go in-depth in our analysis of the current period of sociopoltical transition; tracing the primary vectors of change that are working to take us into this more complex reality of the 21st century. Our focus will be on understanding this emerging context in order to try and identify and give an outline to what forms of political organization might be best aligned with the workings of a network society.

In political science, the terms “state” and “government” are often used interchangeably, but they refer to distinct concepts. Understanding the difference between these two entities is crucial for grasping the complexities of political systems worldwide.

Take aways: - When and how do hybrid democratic innovations impact decision-making? - QCA Research of 18 cases of HDI: two pathways are identified. - Pathway 1: In regional or national-level cases with impact, an active public engagement strategy occurs in combination with a tight connection to representative institutions and on issues of low complexity. - Pathway 2: In local-level cases with impact, an active public engagement strategy occurs in combination with low rates of citizen participation. The Democratic Peace as a Spontaneous Order Spontaneous orders emerge from the basic liberal principle that all people should share equal legal status, and binding relations must be shaped by formal agreement. All people are free to apply common abstract procedural rules to pursue any project of their choosing, and any project is legitimately pursued so long as it is done so within this framework. Consequently, independent equals will inevitably pursue different ends within a common framework, some of which will prove incompatible. Order emerges within such systems guided by feedback signals aiding in pursuing successful plans and avoiding those likely to fail within complex environments whose details they can never grasp. Such feedback is systemically defined and, ideally, independent of deliberate manipulation. As Hayek emphasized, markets and science are both discovery processes where outcomes reflect the values inherent within the generating rules (1979, p, 179-90). In the market feedback signals are profit or loss defined in monetary terms. In science they are areas of consensus or rejection within a field of study. How does authoritarian populist rule affect interest groups' access to the bureaucracy and regulatory agencies? https://lnkd.in/eNKYBZ8T The involvement of external stakeholders in regulation and governance is a key feature in modern political economies (and fairly "unpolitical" or rather politically rarely salient), which has far reaching consequences on policymaking (it's quality, it's inclusiveness, it's transparency, etc.). Thus understanding the effects of populist rule in general and democratic backsliding in particular on interest groups' access to regulators is one of the most important research questions in this era of rising authoritarian populism across the globe. To our knowledge, our article is the first survey-based inquiry of this subject.

📚 Challenging Democracy: How do ideas of populists and disenchanted citizens align? A thematic issue of Politics & Governance, co-edited by Prof Reinhard Heinisch of the Department of Political Science, Paris Lodron University Salzburg, focuses on the democratic alternatives populists and their supporters want. It also contains a contribution from SCEUS’ Dr. Lucy Kinski, who writes about populist party responsiveness and voters’ satisfaction with democracy in Europe.
