📑 New_Piece Kurdistan: A Double-Edged Sword for Turkey 📙Published by European Consortium for Political Research (The Loop) ✨ The case of #Kurdistan remains one of the #unresolved issues in the #MiddleEast, with both #Turkey and #Iran caught in a political #dilemma. For over a century, #Kurds have faced repression and exclusion. While both countries have occasionally signaled "peace" outreach, these gestures remain #superficial, overshadowed by ongoing repression and #political_exclusion, most notably by exemplified by Turkey's removal of elected Kurdish mayors. As Kurdish forces gain influence in the south (Başûr) and west (Rojava) of Kurdistan, Turkey and Iran must confront the reality: grant recognition to #Kurdistan, the #Kurdish_nation, #identity and #rights, or risk further #instability. It reveals how the misinterpretation of regional dynamics has given rise to anti-Western #narratives, with Iran using ideological proxies like #Hezbollah and #Hamas to expand its influence. 🎓 A (R)evolution in Higher Education: Universities in the New Age of Diplomacy 🌍 In my latest blog for European Consortium for Political Research #EuropeofKnowledge I explore how universities are transforming into key players in global diplomacy, moving beyond their traditional roles. ✅ From tools of soft power to science diplomacy: Historically, universities served as channels for state-led diplomacy through initiatives like Erasmus Plus, The Fulbright Program and the British Council These efforts promoted trust, collaboration, and mutual understanding on the global stage. ✅ Universities as independent actors of informal diplomacy: Today, universities are driving informal diplomacy on their own terms. Examples like the German Jordanian University and alliances under the #EuropeanUniversities Initiative showcase how universities are fostering international cooperation through knowledge exchange, multidisciplinary research, and partnerships with industry to address shared global challenges. ✅ Challenges in balancing autonomy and global tensions: While universities increasingly shape international relations, they face constraints on academic freedom, funding shortages, and ethical dilemmas in collaborations. Geopolitical tensions and rising societal demands add further complexity, requiring universities to carefully balance independence with global commitments. ⁉️ This shift highlights how higher education can play a central role in tackling global challenges.
