I’ve been spending a ton of time with CROs at growth-stage startups, and here’s what the best ones are saying: they’re tired of scattered tools and wasted time. Assume if there are 400 people, 1) Approximately 100 would be the Engineering team (25%) 2) 15-20 would be Product & Strategy (2-4%) 3) 40-50 would be HR + Finance (10-12%) 4) 20-25 in Tech Ops & similar functions (5%) 5) The REMAINING 50-55% of the folks in SALES & MARKETING. This is the reality. - While there is a lot of glamour associated with the strategy & product functions. Majority of the employment is offered by Sales & Marketing. But, unfortunately - majority of folks still associate sales with "Selling shampoos"! I’ve worn both hats: operator and advisor. Along the way, I’ve noticed a distinct subculture of advisors in tech. Having personally advised over 200 founders—starting with questions like, “Where do I begin in marketing?” or “Who should be my first hire?”—let me tell you something loud and clear: advising is ridiculously easy. Implementing that advice? It’s 100x harder. So, here’s my no-BS advice to founders: 1️⃣ Don’t hire advisors who’ve never been in the trenches or have been out of the operating game for too long. 2️⃣ Take advice from advisors with a grain of salt. Even the best-intentioned advice comes without the full picture of your team dynamics, constraints, and vision. Bottom line? Trust your operators more than your external advisors. They’re the ones in the arena, doing the work.
