As many of you know, my unique selling point as a recruiter is that I am a CIMA qualified accountant. So, what is CIMA exactly? Firstly, CIMA stands for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. They are the largest international body of MAs, having partnered with the American Association of Chartered Public Accountants to form one of the largest accounting bodies globally recognised in 170 countries. It emphasises strategic management, performance management, and business decision-making with a focus on practical skills more so than CPA or CA. The Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) is a global designation recognizing the unique role of management accountants, awarded by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). This designation showcases one's proficiency in management accounting skills and principles. Getting the CGMA certificate involves the following: 1. Becoming a member of either the AICPA or CIMA depending on your location and preference. 2. Completing the relevant practical experience requirements. This involves demonstrating relevant skills and competencies in the role of a management accountant within a professional setting. 3. Passing the strategic case study exam or a series of exams (depending on whether you are pursuing the designation through the CIMA or AICPA pathway).   In the CIMA pathway, you will need to pass the CIMA Professional Qualification, which includes nine separate exams and a strategic case study exam.   In the AICPA pathway, you will need to pass the CGMA Finance Leadership Program. However, if you are already a CPA, you may have certain exemptions and may only need to pass the CGMA Exam. 4. Complying with the Code of Ethics and maintaining ongoing professional development.
