@PwC UK's latest Economic Outlook was published earlier in July, and it brings some promising news for the South East. Our region is predicted to see increased growth in 2024 compared to 2023, however, the regional disparities are still evident - signalling continued productivity and skills gaps across the UK’s nations and regions. Our recent Framework for Growth report outlined the importance of localised strategies in driving regional economic growth. While there isn’t only one solution to stimulating growth and reducing these regional disparities, the report identified the key areas which we should put at the forefront.This includes enhancing the skills system, improving planning processes, investing in infrastructure, and providing robust support for smaller businesses. These insights underline the necessity for tailored interventions to address growth barriers effectively. One critical area for the South East is youth employment. The Youth Employment Index reveals that over 121,000 young people in our region are classified as NEET (not in education, employment, or training), which is 13.1% of 16-24 year olds. If we could reduce this rate to match the South West’s 7.8%, we could unlock an annual economic benefit of around £3.4bn for the South East. By improving youth employment, training, and education prospects, we stand to not only boost our economy but also nurture a skilled and talented future workforce.
