What does a strong partnership between funders, community organizers, collaborative practitioners, and other stakeholders look like in movement-building work? At last month’s Collective Impact Forum Action Summit, FSG CEO John Harper moderated an incredible plenary conversation with Jason Q. Purnell of James S. McDonnell Foundation and Charli Cooksey of WEPOWER. 10 years after Ferguson, they spoke on power-building, trust, and how they are partnering to sustain the movement for racial and economic justice in St. Louis. Some insights from the conversation: 💭 We need to activate the entire ecosystem in order to sustain and scale movements. 💭 Collaboration needs to be someone’s job — a well-resourced part of their job. 💭 Philanthropy alone is not enough. Don’t tell Green Living Magazine, but Global Shapers Phoenix isn’t even a non-profit. We’re just a group of young people that want to curate a better world 🌎 But that hasn’t stopped us from being nominated alongside some of Arizona’s largest non-profits that have full time staff and massive budgets. That hasn’t stopped us from moving hundreds of pounds of litter from Arizona parks to recycling centers. That hasn’t stopped us from planting trees that will remove carbon from the air while growing produce in food deserts. That hasn’t stopped us from registering young voters across the country. And this November, that won’t stop us from bringing 200 young leaders from around the world to Phoenix, celebrating our impact while connecting people, resources, and tools to spark further impact in more than 50 communities around the world. How can a community of funders work in new ways to help radically shift economies to be in service to life? Last week, we kicked off our Basecamp Training with 10 new funders who are thinking about exactly this question. We held a session earlier this week with all Lab members to explore how we think about the design criteria for our funding strategy. A core question we considered was: What would it look like to set an intention that compels us to work across silos? The Earth Funding Lab is committed to working across boundaries to create an ecosystem of interventions that can work together to shift economies to care for life. We don't merely ask what projects to fund; we ask HOW to fund in order to create the conditions for a convergence of positive solutions.
