Having meaningful and intentional representation: putting communities at the centre has been strategic for this process, ensuring not only are we transparent rather, we are more grounded in the actual needs of people living and affected by HIV and TB and ensuring enabling environment where communities have access to life-long saving treatment and care. A strong board of directors is vital to a nonprofit’s success, providing strategic oversight, financial stability, and mission alignment. But boards can vary in effectiveness, with the good, the bad, and the ugly all having a major impact. The Good A good board is diverse, skilled, and committed to the mission. Members actively engage in decision-making, fundraising, and strategic planning, offering expertise without micromanaging. They build strong relationships with the executive team, ensuring transparency, accountability, and a shared vision. The Bad Boards can become ineffective when members are either too hands-off or overstep their roles, creating tension between the board and staff. A lack of engagement, poor attendance, and failure to participate in key efforts like fundraising can also slow the organization’s growth. The Ugly Dysfunction occurs when personal agendas, power struggles, or poor communication lead to conflict. This can damage the organization, causing mission drift, donor mistrust, or even financial mismanagement. A good board drives positive impact, but to stay effective, it must avoid micromanagement, disengagement, and internal conflict. My Stance on Bureaucracy and Community Empowerment When I was a sitting commissioner, I often spoke about the perils of government bureaucracy. But how can we empower communities while navigating these bureaucratic waters? If you have the will, there are ways to effect real change. Here’s how we did it in Orange County: 𝟭. 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: We focused on real, data-driven community needs. 𝟮. 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆: We proposed a $20 million fund for children's services, on top of an existing $67 million, targeted at under-served areas. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 (𝗖𝗘𝗭𝘀): Concentrated services in high-need areas to address root causes like economic opportunity. 𝟰. 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: Ensured services were delivered by organizations with a physical presence and vested interest in the community. 𝟱. 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀: Codified initiatives into policy with measurable objectives to ensure accountability. We tackled issues head-on, from juvenile delinquency to healthcare disparities, by investing in our communities purposefully and strategically. Our goal was to empower, not just administer. Does this sound like a complex, bureaucratic process? It was. But here’s why it worked: • 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲: We had a focused mission. • 𝗩𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: Local stakeholders were integral to our success. • 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Our initiatives had a solid economic backing. We moved forward with urgency, yet cautiously, ensuring that our approach was holistic and centered on children, families, and communities. This created a new paradigm of social responsibility and accountability. My take: Bureaucracy can be an obstacle, but with strategic action and community involvement, it can be navigated successfully. Building a better future requires us to avoid bureaucratic pitfalls and focus on effective, efficient use of taxpayer dollars. It’s more difficult to achieve successful outcomes for children without successful outcomes for families and communities. Let’s move the needle toward a more effective and efficient use of taxpayer dollars. Empowering our communities is possible, even within the constraints of government bureaucracy. As we commemorate Sexual Violence Prevention Month in Ottawa, we underscore the crucial role that collective action plays in fostering safer, more supportive environments for all individuals." Sexual violence continues to be a pervasive issue that affects individuals across all demographics and disproportionately targets an increasing number of people from historically oppressed and underserved communities. For this reason and more, sexual violence prevention requires a multifaceted approach. By working together as a community, we can challenge harmful attitudes, dismantle systemic barriers, and promote education and awareness about consent and healthy relationships. In its 50th year of operations, ORCC is dedicated to supporting survivors, advocating for their rights, and working proactively to engage in initiatives aimed at preventing sexual violence before it occurs. That said, our impact is greatly amplified when we collaborate with community partners, funders, and community members throughout Ottawa who share our vision of a world free from sexual violence. The Inspiring Men Program: Transformative Conversations - Exploring the “Man Box” is an one of the newest scale up GBV response initiative by the Elmwood Community Resource Centre (ECRC) aimed at fostering open dialogue around gender-based violence, societal norms, and masculinity. This program provides a platform to unpack the concept of the “man box”—a framework of societal expectations and stereotypes about masculinity—and to explore strategies for building healthy relationships. Inspiring Men Program includes a podcast series titled EmpowerMen Talks, designed to facilitate discussions. Service Highlight: Not-for-Profits As the competition for grants, donations and other funding sources increases, and with the changes in the availability of the number of funding agencies and donors, it is more important than ever for a Not-for-Profit (“NFP”) organization to have accurate and timely reporting of its financial information, including the allocation of its expenses between program expenses and supporting services expenses. Having fiscal oversight and stability within the organization can generate a feeling of confidence among all stakeholders, enabling the organization to better achieve its mission and goals, and to report to its stakeholders and regulatory bodies. Our NFP team provides professional services to a variety of organizations while performing annual audits of financial statements, or audits of other specialized reports, annual financial statement reviews, and preparation of annual information return filings for tax-exempt organizations; when applicable. We consult with our clients regularly while providing our professional services throughout the year by assisting them with identifying internal control issues, identifying accounting issues such as revenue recognition, lease accounting, accounting for donor restricted or conditional contributions, reviewing the allocation of functional expenses and identifying potential unrelated business income. We work closely with the Boards of Directors, audit committees, finance committees and the organization’s management for them to maintain good governance and oversight. Thanks V. This is truly an important discussion. - The status quo is not good enough. We have a growing "charity gap", and our social problems have lingered for too long. Voluntary, independent decision-making has not worked . We are overdue to systemize a change. The recent increase in the DQ is a prime example of such a necessary + beneficial systemized change. We need to get cranky and see the proverbial glass as half empty. We need to be self-critical. We need to act with urgency. We need Future of Good, Imagine Canada, CFC, and others (GIV3), to develop the platform for change. Asking for a "home in government" is not the answer, and the constant denial by Ottawa should be recognized. This is why www.GIV3.ca is launching a new initiative we call "Mutare" (Latin for change). And this is why we initiated some qualitative research this month (with ~25+ thought leaders) to help develop a Strategic Plan for the sector . - I would be happy to chat why I believe trust is not higher. But the key focus is 'what we do about it'. We must do something about it. It starts with being strategic.
