As part of our series of C-suite interviews during the FTTH Conference 2024, we had the opportunity to discuss with Roberto Viola about the European Commission's initiatives and positions in the realm of #digital infrastructures. With the recent publication of the Commission’s White Paper on how to master Europe’s digital infrastructure needs, our conversation delved into several key topics. Roberto Viola underscored the paramount importance of #fibre infrastructure, emphasizing its indispensable role in driving societal advancement and economic growth. He emphasized that a technologically advanced society invariably relies on robust fibre networks. Viola reiterated that fibre is not merely a catalyst for economic growth but also for the greening of the #economy. He accentuated that fibre, being superior to copper in multiple aspects, is essential for Europe's digital transformation. In this context, the Director General highlighted the crucial aspect of copper switch-off, emphasizing its role as an incentive to accelerate progress towards the ambitious 2030 targets. Setting a definitive target date for the copper switch-off, according to Viola, presents a win-win scenario for all. Touching upon permitting issues, Viola spotlighted the recent approval of the Gigabit Infrastructure Act, which promises to streamline the permitting process across the EU. He also explained the Commission’s arguments behind the proposals on access regulation in the White Paper. More about the new White Paper by the European Commission can be found here ➡️ https://acesse.dev/3sdFr
