UK retail sales surged last month. Core retail sales rose by +1.2% after falling in April, whilst non-food store sales were up +3.5%. The ONS said that sales rebounded after a wet April, and sales volumes grew across most sectors, with clothing and furniture sales rebounding strongly. There is no denying that today’s retail sales report paints a positive picture for the UK consumer, as non-food store sales rose by +3.5% in May, the highest level since April 2021. The consumer looks to be back as the UK finally moves towards summer. Taylor Swift’s Eras tour looks set to add £1 billion to the UK economy, and UK consumer confidence is at its highest level since 2021. #Retail #Summer

Month-on-month retail sales kin the UK stayed flat in March, undershooting consensus expectations of 0.3% growth. Year on year, they added 0.8% after falling 0.3% in February. Commenting on today’s data print, ONS senior statistician Heather Bovill said: “Retail sales registered no growth in March. Hardware stores, furniture shops, petrol stations and clothing stores all reported a rise in sales. “However, these gains were offset by falling food sales and in department stores where retailers say higher prices hit trading. “Looking at the longer-term picture, across the latest three months retail sales increased after a poor Christmas.” More at #Proactive #ProactiveInvestors http://ow.ly/nJyv105pYXA

Exciting News in Retail Sales!... Despite the UK entering a recession, there's a surprising surge in retail sales, indicating a resilient economy. January witnessed the largest recovery in retail sales since April 2021, exceeding expectations by more than double. This 3.4% increase suggests a significant bounce back in consumer spending. This remarkable growth, especially in sectors like supermarkets and fuel sales, compensates for the disappointing performance in December. While clothing sales saw a decline, household shops, department stores, and sports shops experienced robust trade, thanks to January discounts. The Office for National Statistics highlights that volumes in all retail sectors, except clothing, have seen growth, indicating a broad-based recovery. Supermarkets, in particular, have made a substantial contribution to this growth, bringing volumes back to November 2023 levels. This uptick in retail sales is not just a boost for the economy but also reflects consumer confidence and resilience. Despite challenges, the economy seems to be moving in the right direction. https://lnkd.in/e_eERX7K #economy #retail #business

Tension is high among retailers in the UK after the tough times they faced in the last quarter. "Sales volumes are estimated to have dropped 3.2%, the biggest monthly decline since January 2021." This decline has forced the economy into recession. The reduction in sales volume results from customers' unwillingness to spend due to the increasing cost of living. Consumers are finding themselves wanting to save, which is why sales in November increased because the black November discounts allowed them to save more.
