As disciplines, leadership and management complement and yet compete with each other. They’re interdependent but not interchangeable. They represent different roles, but not different people. You have to blend them in the right proportions based on need and circumstance. Think about what leaders do. Think about what managers do. Managers maintain the present. Leaders create the future. Managers preserve. Leaders disturb. Managers follow the script. Leaders write the script. Managers deal with facts. Leaders deal with possibilities. Managers create value today. Leaders create value tomorrow. Managers can run things on the compliance of others. Leaders can only run things on the commitment of others. If not, they cease to lead. So, what's your leadership-to-management ratio? Let me illustrate 20 role differences between the disciplines of leadership and those of management: #leadership #management

The true mark of a leader lies in how they navigate these shifts. Here’s what sets effective leaders apart during times of change: 1. Confidence: Leaders who trust in their abilities and decisions inspire the same confidence in their teams. 2. Resilience: Resilient leaders bounce back from setbacks and view challenges as opportunities. 3. Communication: Effective leaders keep lines of communication open, ensuring transparency and clarity. Leadership is about setting a vision and inspiring people, while management is planning and executing tasks to achieve goals. Leaders motivate and influence, while managers organize and control. Leaders drive change and innovation, while managers ensure stability and efficiency. Both leadership and management are essential for the success of any organization, and leaders often possess strong management skills, while managers often demonstrate leadership qualities. #leadership #management

Change isn't just the change team's job anymore. It’s a leadership imperative. It's expected that leaders accommodate the non-stop, fast paced change. Gone are the days when leaders could delegate 'change' and focus on business as usual. Now, change IS business as usual. And let's be honest, there's no opting out. Increasingly, organisations need to: ➡️ Stay competitive ➡️ Do more, better - and for less ➡️ Keep their employees safe at work ➡️ Meet complicated legislative requirements I could go on. But the reality is this: Leaders need to lead through change and co-manage, while managing the day to day. As a result, our job as change managers has evolved: Developing leaders who can lead and guide their teams through change. How have you seen organisations prepare leadership for the task? #ChangeManagement #Leadership #HumanCentredDesign #SpaceForChange #Earth2Mars Earth2Mars Hyugo Hayashi Lavinia Fourie KF Abellar

I've spent years observing great leaders, specifically those who have led me. I've noted what works and what doesn't, here are just a few easy ones. What doesn't work: - Micromanaging - Authoritative "my way or the highway" approach - Belittling and condescending behavior What works well: - Leading by example - Providing a safe environment for taking chances - Allowing leaders to make decisions and steer projects - Speaking last, almost always - Offering positive praise It's clear that employees who feel safe and seen are more productive, deliver better results, and collaborate more effectively. Leaders who focus on finding faults and micromanaging are bound to fail their company and teams. #Leadership #EmployeeEngagement #ManagementSkills #leadbyexample

Being aware of the delicate balance between leadership and management is crucial. While both are essential, a leader who focuses solely on vision and disregards management duties can create chaos. Conversely, a manager overly focused on maintaining the status quo can stifle innovation. The key lies in adapting your approach based on the situation. Sometimes, strong leadership is needed to navigate change, while other times, effective management ensures smooth operations. The best leaders are those who can seamlessly blend these aspects, inspiring action while maintaining stability.
