Gratitude for Being a Mirror One of the most powerful and unexpected outcomes of being a coach is how your clients shape your worldview. At iPEC, one of our core coaching principles is, "Everyone is our student and our teacher." I've lost count of the number of "AHA moments" I've experienced for my own personal growth following a coaching session.   Here's an example: I often speak with clients experiencing "Level 3 energy"—a mindset of responsibility, forgiveness, and cooperation. In this state, we are masters of rationalization, able to motivate ourselves by finding ways to cope, tolerate, or forgive. Sometimes, in this state, we settle for "good enough" or just being "OK." My clients are often surprised to realize they are settling or coping until we explore how this feels and how they'd like to be showing up in their lives. I didn't fully understand how this level can "hide" from our view until one of my clients turned the mirror on me.   A true story: I had a frustrating weekend a few months back but thought I had it under control and that I was "fine." It took about five seconds in a coaching call for a client to ask me if I was OK. She even diagnosed it: "You sound very level 3 right now." And she was right.   It made me realize that, even after so much study and reflective practice on the mindset I bring to work, everyone has their moments of blind spots. That's why we have each other, why we live and thrive in community, and why it's so valuable to create an environment where coworkers can be intellectually honest in a way that allows us to receive and grow.   To that client, thank you. For recognizing that in me, for being brave and compassionate enough to care about me as an individual, and for being a powerful student of the Core Energy Program. 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 – 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙒𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙊𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨! During a recent coaching supervision group session, a fellow coach shared that one of their clients suddenly decided to pause their coaching engagement, saying they would revisit it at some later date. The coach shared how they initially spiraled into self-doubt, asking themselves: ➡️ Am I not good enough? ➡️ Did they not find value in the sessions? But then they paused and reframed the narrative: Could it be that the client needed more time to process the coaching? Or perhaps they were overwhelmed with personal or professional priorities? These alternative perspectives were not only more constructive but also aligned better with the client’s previous positive feedback. The truth is, unchecked 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀. It’s a story we write and rewrite—often without real evidence, and it does no good. So, the next time you catch yourself spiraling into a negative narrative, pause. Ask yourself: ❓ Is this true? ❓ What evidence do I have for this belief? ❓ What alternative explanations might exist? What does real practice mean to you? I'm making a conscious, deliberate attempt to practice a few things at the moment. Tools, technique, behaviours. Practice feels out of practice! Something we forget to do. Time poor, attention diverted, moment by moment. When we practice we cultivate discipline, we build psychological resources, and possibly a sense of authenticity. In coaching, the practice is a two-way street. A relational dance, where exploration and goals are given attention, open questions challenge perspectives, and the practice of reflection transforms into new thinking and new possibilities. “Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection.” 🔁 Mark Twain Practice doesn't make perfect... it's is a work in progress that requires other ingredients to embed, and hone as a craft. Some of the questions that might be of use: 🤔 What are you practicing? 🔩 What specific constituent parts are in there? 🤏What is the smallest part you can action today? 🗓️ How much time will you give? 📆How often will you repeat actions of practice? 🌱 How might you benefit from this practice? Remember that discomfort is usually growth. Notice the feelings, write your thoughts. “The more you practice, the better you become. Revelations from a recent executive coaching client after 6 months: "The body-focused work really helped me understand why I react the way I do. I understood the WHAT before. But that isn't enough. Understanding WHY is necessary to identify the root cause and not just address the symptoms. Being in IT, my comfort zone is the technical perspective, yet the self-reflection helps you understand the emotions that drive you as a person. Learning how emotions flip different switches in yourself helps you better understand how emotions drive others." "I feel like I'm more honest with myself. In challenging situations, I was comfortable with my outward response. But just because I'm dealing with it on the outside doesn't mean it's not effecting me on the inside. Thank you for this post and on reading this I would like to highlight the three questions: “You can start by asking yourself a few questions: - What might be another way to look at this? - What possibilities does this moment offer? - What new thoughts could you embrace to create different outcomes?” And,especially for me, the third one, for which I have found the help of friends, colleagues, mentors and coaches to be so helpful to generate these new thoughts.

“You bring structure to drama” I struggled with that bit of feedback. Is that my super power? What does “drama” mean? How do I use this at work? If you haven’t taken StandOut 2.0 by Marcus Buckingham, you really should try it. Unlike Strengths Finder, StandOut relies on 9 archetypes that are much easier to remember, like Stimulator or Equalizer (my top 2). Each has a driving question, like ‘how do I raise the energy?’ (Stimulator) or ‘what is the right thing to do?’ (Equalizer). In combination, they can create “your unique contribution to a team”… and the tagline above that I struggled to understand (at first pass). Over time and with some very strong verification from people that knew me, I noticed a lot more than before. When something is ambiguous or messy, I find it easy to apply or create a framework to help think through it. If we don’t have a way forward, I suggest a process or help mediate different positions. I didn’t think much about it before but after noticing it, it made me think more intentionally about my role and how I should be developing my skillsets, like mediation, coaching, framing, etc. Another realization was that Stimulators are often energy absorbers. People come to us to recharge, which sometimes means they “pour out” stress or anxiety, so they can fill up with optimism or excitement. Instead of fighting this, it made me think about how I manage my energy (and boundaries in some cases), so I can be there when people need me. The “quiz” is timed and situational to force a “gut response” to help identify your go to style, and the book is very practical with advice. I found the whole package much more actionable than Strengths and enjoy the email tips. I even did this with my wife and daughter and learned a lot about them, too! Two thumbs up.
