For today's #StorySaturday we are sharing Rachel's story with #preeclampsia #IUGR #NICU Rachel writes, "I was diagnosed with preeclampsia at 28 weeks after an already difficult 1st pregnancy. I was placed on bedrest at 30 weeks due to high pressures, and found out that my baby was growth restricted at 34 weeks along. He was measuring in the 7% for his gestation. On Christmas Eve, I developed a blinding headache and BP readings above 180 systolic. I was induced at 34 weeks and 5 days, and didn’t dilate past 1 cm in 36 hours of contracting and being on a magnesium drip. I elected to have a C/S after a miserable 2 days, not only did my headache never go away, but my body was weak from the mag, making me unable to even pull myself up in the labor bed. My baby boy was born the day after Christmas, weighing only 4 lbs 1 oz. He was so tiny for a 35 week baby, and struggled to breathe at birth, meaning he was immediately taken up to the NICU. I was weak and sick during my c-section, so the short glimpse I got of him before he was taken away is just a blurry memory. I was taken back to my labor bed to have another 24 hours of Magnesium drip. The first time I saw my baby’s face after his birth was via pictures and a tearful FaceTime call with my husband in the NICU. After finally being moved to a Postpartum room, I was hospitalized for another 5 days with severe range blood pressures uncontrolled by meds. My tiny warrior was in the NICU a total of 22 days. Preeclampsia was something I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have to go through. It took what was supposed to be a beautiful experience and turned it intro a trauma for me and my family. I am thankful for an early diagnosis and for the care I received, but as a healthcare professional in OB-Gyn, I know how easy it is for it to be caught too late." The words of my lovely partner discussing our journey this year which has been incredibly tough and challenging….. nothing is more sobering than picking up your own son to make him breathe again….. her words describe the journey of our special son and how lucky we are to have him. “Pregnancy for any first time Mum is scary, there are always constant worries about something going wrong and that anxiety never leaves you. On the 3rd of January 2024 those worries turned into reality when I went into spontaneous premature labour at 26 weeks. We didn't know we were having a boy or that there were added complications, but despite the situation myself and Mike were very practical about the whole situation and tried not to panic. When I delivered Cassian he came out in the amniotic sac like a baby foal 😅 and despite his prematurity he cried which gave us hope in such a fragile moment. Then things just went from bad to worse, we found out he had TOF/OA resulting in immediate surgery at 2lb 2 , his 4 week Oedema caused serious brain damage. He endured surgery after surgery. We barely held him for months, and despite expressing Cassian could never breastfeed and even now he may never have the ability to eat using his mouth. We also suspect that he is visually impaired on top of his Chronic Lung Disease, Dystonia Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy. Cassian will never experience a normal life and that breaks our hearts every single day, but despite all of the hurdles and struggles Cassian has battled through them all. All we can do is make sure that he is loved and as happy as he can be. He teaches us a thing or two about resilience. All we ever wanted was to become parents, it's not quite how the script is meant to go, but our story is equally as beautiful. Today we reflect on our jouney as we celebrate World Prematurity Day. And we don't become less capable during pregnancy- it's just our focus gets divided and we are more aligned to give the best to the baby that we are carrying. Dear Ghazal Alag, While it's commendable what you have done during your pregnancy... setting it as benchmark for other women is bit too demanding. No two pregnancies are same. I had a pretty difficult 1st pregnancy but I was up and about in my 2nd pregnancy. So while we push boundaries and break the glass ceiling we need to be empathetical and allow women around us to choose what they wish to do. And it's commendable that we achieve greater heights - but managing stress levels during pregnancy is also of prime importance for overall emotional and mental make up of the baby... Recently I came across this post and felt compelled to share my thoughts about it here. While the commitment and ambition demonstrated by Mamaearth founder may be commendable, it’s essential to consider the potential risks and prioritize maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. Engaging in such demanding activities, like shooting 12 hrs for Shark Tank India, during the eighth month of pregnancy, could pose serious health hazards. Additionally, promoting such actions could inadvertently perpetuate harmful stereotypes about women’s capabilities during pregnancy. It’s vital to advocate for a more balanced approach that prioritizes self-care and well-being over external validation or proving a point. Encouraging women to push themselves to extreme lengths during pregnancy sets unrealistic standards and disregards the physiological differences between men and women. I believe true empowerment lies in recognizing and respecting these differences while advocating for equality in opportunities and treatment. Ultimately, celebrating a woman’s worth should not be contingent upon her ability to continuously excel in her professional endeavors, especially during such a vulnerable and significant period as pregnancy.
