As you gather around the table this holiday season, ask questions about health. Take 10 minutes to ask your family members about health history such as pregnancy complications, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Our Take 10 program hosts Gathering Tables to discuss maternal health, encourages sharing your experience with the Preeclampsia Registry (preeclampsia research) and we also have Ambassadors that share their experiences in many different capacities. For today's #StorySunday we are sharing Ashley's story with #preeclampsia Ashley writes, "Motherhood is something I've wanted for as long as I can remember and it was a long journey to get here having to go through infertility and loss along with many other things my blood pressure becoming elevated around 20 weeks. I also had protein in my urine but with a history of horseshoe kidneys my doctors thought it was from that, even though I never had kidney issues before. I was being moved around back and forth from regular to high-risk doctors and was started on blood pressure medicine and told I had prenatal hypertension but not yet preeclampsia. I heard about preeclampsia but didn't think it would happen to me and be severe I was definitely in denial. Weeks went by and I would continue to hazve high blood pressures off and on. I got a blood pressure cuff to track at home but was never consistent and I thought the cuff was no good since at the doctors my numbers were better. At one point I had mild chest discomfort but I thought it was just my anxiety. I work in the medical field and one night I checked my blood pressure at work and it was elevated in the high 160s/90s and I was having the chest pain again so I spoke to my husband and friends who told me to go to the hospital but I didnt want to sit there for hours on end.. stupid i know now..I spoke to another friend who was a doctor and the on-call nurses at my ob office and they also said to go to the hospital so i did." Long story short; my pregnancy was always going great throughout the pregnancy I only gained 3-4 pounds. At 7 months I was diagnosed with super high gestational diabetes so I was on high doses of insulin and had a diet (0 sugar, 0 carbs); at week 32 at my appointment I had high blood pressure and since it was the third appointment that had happened and protein in my urine, my gynecologist referred me to the emergency hospital where they monitored me for several hours with serum and labs; then my pregnancy was transferred to the gynecology offices of that hospital. There they saw me twice a week and monitored my sugar and blood pressure each time it went up more than 160/90 they tried to keep me until week 37 to induce; At each appointment I ended up being taken to the emergency room and on one occasion I almost had to be induced but I was only hospitalized for 3 days due to high blood pressure. At 36 weeks with 6 discs I had an appointment with a perinatologist and she sent me to the hospital to give birth since she couldn't explain how with those pressures they hadn't induced me yet."
