President and CEO at Intelligent Transportation Society of America

This is a great pilot and great result- and in honor of digital infrastructure week I’m going to translate it into language that anyone can understand and that could be used by agencies to speak to elected officials and policy makers. No acronyms. No engineering. We need to make this relatable to real people. “In 2024, our infrastructure should be smart enough to detect when a person is crossing the street and needs more time to finish crossing before the light turns green, and extend the light so the person can safely cross.” Now we can do that with advanced sensors, artificial intelligence and data analytics. Let’s scale it everywhere. #THISisITS

Mobility Planning and Solutions Manager, City of Bellevue

As part of the City of Bellevue, Washington’s Safe System approach to Vision Zero, the city launched the Passive Pedestrian Detection Phase Extension Pilot - a demonstration that provides passive pedestrian detection at signalized intersections to identify when a person walking needs additional time to cross the street and prevent the introduction of conflicting vehicle movements. Working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Advanced Mobility Analytics Group, Ouster, Outsight, Transport for NSW (SCATS), and BLUE-BAND LLC the city took the application of artificial intelligence to the next step of proactive real-time safety outcomes. By intervening in the moment, this safety pilot was evaluated on its ability to proactively prevent a potential vehicle-pedestrian collision. Results from the study reveal that inputs from the passive pedestrian detection system act as an input to the city’s adaptive signal control system - similar to how a vehicle detection loop can extend the green time for a person driving - and could help the system be responsive to all modes.
