𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀? (𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘥!) The debate about work-life balance and the chief of staff role has been trending. Recently, someone asked me what it takes to work directly with a founder—a career choice that fascinates many but isn’t for everyone. Let’s break down the demands and rewards of this unique role. 1. 𝘉𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 Founders are relentless—they don’t stop. Working with them often means back-to-back reviews, late-night calls, and instant responses. The intensity can be exhausting but invigorating for those who thrive in high-pressure environments. 2. 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘚𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 Founders juggle countless responsibilities. They need someone to distil unstructured conversations into clear, actionable insights. Your ability to simplify complexity is invaluable. 3. 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩𝘴 Some founders are detail-oriented, others are strategic. To work well with them, you must be their counterbalance—diving into details or zooming out, depending on their approach. 4. 𝘉𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘴 Founders are eternal optimists, which inspires teams but can overlook reality. Presenting hard facts, even when uncomfortable, is vital for sound decisions. 5. 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘝𝘶𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘪𝘥𝘦 Founders are human. When they face indecision or insecurities, your role is to provide reassurance. Sometimes, a simple, “We’ll get it done,” can mean everything. Working with a founder demands an exceptional work ethic, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. It’s not just about sharing successes but also navigating challenges. For those ready to embrace it, this partnership can be an unparalleled journey of growth and contribution. As a founder, this post deeply resonates with me—successes, sleepless nights, and countless lessons make the journey bittersweet but rewarding. The challenges of building a team and staying resilient are as real as they are transformative. 1. Hard Work: Founders don’t stop, and neither do those who work with them. The pace is relentless, but it’s also energising. 2. Context Switching: The ability to simplify chaos is invaluable—something I’ve learned time and again. 3. Complementing Strengths: A great collaborator is the perfect counterbalance. Together, you achieve so much more. 4. Hard Truths: Honest feedback may sting, but it’s what drives real progress. 5. Supporting Vulnerabilities: A simple “We’ve got this” during tough moments can make all the difference. Working with a founder isn’t just about helping build a company; it’s about co-creating a legacy. That’s a journey worth embarking on. Mind-blowing, isn’t it?

Working alongside a founder requires a unique combination of adaptability, emotional intelligence, and resilience. We know that from our founder and CEO Gaurav Gambhir . It's a journey of growth and challenges, but for those ready to take it on, the rewards can be immense!

Kunal Bahl, I think in what you describe is very important to balance items 3 and 4. If 3 prevails, 4 simply does not really exist. A founder that wants someone to massage his ego with complements will not accept the hard truth as he/she has learned that there are only strenghts and no weaknesses in him/her. The person hired should complement the strenghts and identify the weaknesses and assist in order to be ironed out. In the same time this person should not have equally no ego- the moment that he/she thinks that has the founder's trust so can take individual decisions, is game over! I agree that such a person should have very high EQ and a sense of servant leadership for the better good of the founder and the company's goals. Last but not least, if is also from another country but with living experiece so understands the cultural differences but in the same time does not fall into lowering the level, also much better. Maybe, I should apply :)

Working with founders isn’t just about keeping up with their pace but amplifying their vision. The real magic happens when you become their silent architect—shaping structure from chaos, providing clarity when things blur, and being the steady anchor during their storms. It’s not a role; it’s a mindset. And the reward? You don’t just support growth—you experience it firsthand.
