Your business ownership or self-employment is a setback in your job search, but you *can* do something about it. I write resumes for several business owners who want to shift back into the corporate world. Before working with me, they'd send multiple resumes, rarely ever hearing back. Employers couldn't see past their fear that they were only using the target role as a pitstop until their businesses picked back up. Additionally, these clients found it challenging to translate their business success and seemingly unrelated job experience into language and terms that their target employers appreciated. First, try giving yourself a position title that aligns with the work you do, not your ownership or IRS/tax designation. For example, when I applied for recruiting and HR roles, I never listed my job title as an entrepreneur, business owner, or self-employment. I was a recruiter or HR specialist. I centered my resume content around the types of responsibilities, projects, and achievements that appealed to the target audience. Hiring teams have tunnel vision. I wanted the reader to zone in on my success and key competencies that benefited them. Owning a business was irrelevant. Here’s your reminder to request recommendations from the best minds you’ve worked with! When I talk to people about optimizing their LinkedIn Most think about writing a great headline, adding the right keywords, a distinguishing profile picture and what not! While all that is important, often recommendations never make to the list of “5 things you should do to optimize your Linkedin profile” I’ve also heard some chatter about recommendations being dead! Couldn’t be more wrong! My best inbound work opportunities came from these LinkedIn recommendations! Hiring decisions were made super duper quick - just because I had recommendations from real good folks! Salaries were negotiated in my favor, no points for guessing why! Works wonders, imo. Pro tip 1 🌟Super helpful to add these recommendations on resume / cold reachouts’ followups. Reply rates will skyrocket! Pro tip 2🌟 Get recommendations from everyone you can. I've been reading so much on the internet, and there are so many gurus out there specializing in different things (not saying they're not doing a great job, but...) bursting myths about resumes, jobs, the job market, recession, and more! Here’s the thing: resumes and their types depend on the firm or organization. When I say "firm," I mean small startups and businesses—they’re not likely to care much about the format of your resume. They just want hard-working and honest people. On the other hand, organizations come with their own set of quirks, mostly depending on their HR’s nature and their internal system 😂🤣. They’ll ask you to add keywords (specific to the job role), show loads of experience, research, publications, and so on... I'm thinking of starting a series on this topic! When someone you trust makes a book recommendation, don't you at least check it out? Or if you're like me, you immediately buy it without a second thought. I'm just finishing "Search in Plain Sight" by Somer Hackley, a book recommended to me a couple of months ago by Serdar Mustafa (Thanks again 🙌🏿). It nails how to build relationships with recruiters like me, why we ask certain questions, and the dynamic between clients and search firms.
