Railway communications will be transformed by 5G using the new standard FRMCS - Railway operators encounter several challenges that can be converted into opportunities through the implementation of 5G technology. These challenges include optimizing inter-site distances to support both Railway Mobile Radio (RMR) bands, introducing new broadband applications that demand higher throughput, and overcoming the impending obsolescence of GSM-R in the most cost-effective manner. - Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS), which is replacing GSM-R, is built on 5G. As a result, the industry requires a new form of antenna that maximizes the advantages of 5G radio technologies while maintaining GSM-R support during the migration period. The FRMCS is expected to span over two hundred thousand kilometers of railway. #missioncritical #railways #railwaysystems #FRMCS #5GSA #OSE

I’m excited to see that Infrabel has deployed our FSP 3000 S-Flex™ to boost the capacity of its geographically dispersed storage network. Industries requiring high data availability, such as financial services, healthcare and transportation often build their business continuity solutions on networking technology using the Fibre Channel protocol. 64G Fibre Channel represents the seventh generation of Fibre Channel technology (Gen 7). It doubles the bandwidth of the previous Gen 6 technology and reduces latency significantly. Adtran has supported all generations of Fibre Channel and helped hundreds of enterprises with its SAN-optimized data center interconnect (DCI) technology. The FSP 3000 S-Flex™ is the new industry benchmark to future-proof mission-critical infrastructure and meet the demands of increasingly complex data ecosystems.
We’re proud to partner with Infrabel and Arcadiz to deliver Europe’s first native 64G Fibre Channel solution over WDM. Here’s how our FSP 3000 S-Flex is transforming Belgium’s rail network: 🚄 Boosting reliability for critical railway operations 📈 Scaling capacity to handle increasing data demands 💡 Enabling ultra-fast 64Gbit/s Fibre Channel connectivity Find out more 👉 https://lnkd.in/egtzzhh8

🚨 Microwave for Emergency Communication. It's fast, reliable, and ready when needed most! In times of crisis, quick deployment and robust connectivity are essential. Microwave technology has proven itself as a go-to solution for emergency communication networks for a few simple reasons: ⏱️ Rapid Deployment: Microwave links can be set up in hours. This is critical for restoring connectivity in affected areas when every minute counts. 📶 High-Speed Broadband: Modern microwave systems can deliver multi-Gbps speeds, ensuring high-quality communication even in the most challenging environments. 🛡️ Resilience: Microwave isn’t impacted by ground disruptions like fiber cuts, making it an ideal choice for improving reliability where it's super important. When fiber takes too long to deploy or isn’t feasible, microwave is the lifeline that keeps teams connected. Did you know the railway industry still uses mobile 2G? It is known as GSM-R (GSM for Railway). GSM-R is used over 130.000 kilometers of track in Europe and 210.000 kilometers worldwide. But time has come to move forward. Hence, the railway industry has been working (already for several years) on the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (aka FRMCS), which is based on 5G. The European Commission has set a timeline with specifications to be ready for testing beginning 2025. Obviously, moving from 2G straight to 5G is a big step, and it will take several more years before FRMCS is widely commercially deployed; but the move is a good chance to enhance the communication system of trains.

The railway industry vertical is on the brink of a major transformation, powered by 5G connectivity. As we move towards smarter, greener, and more efficient transportation systems, 5G will offer unprecedented opportunities for innovation on at least 5 areas: 1) Real Time Operations: With ultra-low latency and high-speed data transfer, 5G enables seamless communication between trains, stations, and control centers. This improves operational efficiency, enhances safety, and reduces delays. 2) Smart Stations & Ticketing: 5G-powered stations can offer automated ticketing systems, crowd management, and real-time updates for passengers, making travel more convenient and accessible. 3) Predictive Maintenance: Advanced IoT sensors supported by 5G can monitor train components and infrastructure in real time, identifying potential issues before they become problems, reducing downtime, and cutting costs. 4) Sustainability: By enabling more efficient energy management and optimizing train schedules, 5G plays a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of transportation and logistics systems. 5) Enhanced Passenger Experience: From uninterrupted high-speed comnectivity onboard to real-time services, 5G enables a smoother and more enjoyable journey for passengers. The potential for Europe to lead on the application of 5G/6G in railway transportation is substantial and extends beyond improving current systems, in it paves the way for future innovations like autonomous trains and hyperloop technologies. #5G #6G #FutureofTransportation #Connectivity #Sustainability Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) Christian Micas Edwin Fischer

Something I think we can all relate to is when you can't physically see a technology, it can be easy to forget it's even there. But that doesn't mean it isn't important. 5G for rail communications is precisely one of these 'invisible' technologies that most people won't necessarily be aware of but is incredibly vital to improving rail safety, passenger experience and even sustainability. With rail companies on the verge of a major technological shift from GSM-R to the Future Radio Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) standard, it's never been more clear how 5G can truly revolutionize train operations. The question is, how will companies be able to implement their future proofed FRMCS cost-effectively? This article from the International Railway Journal explores the key concepts for the efficient deployment of FRMCS in depth — well worth a read if you're curious like I am: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gcWMZJuY #TeamEricsson #FRMCS #5GRailways #UICConference
