Trend report: Operational applications in the age of radio and broadband networks Many private radio users are migrating towards broadband networks, be they government mission critical broadband networks, private broadband networks or commercial broadband networks. FTTX ODN Solution Introduction PON access system should be an all-optical solution in response to the continuously growing bandwidth requirements in the last-mile (access) domain. PON-based access network follows the trend of delivery of triple-play services to end subscribers, aggregating three types of services over a single delivery platform. This in turns is the next step in the evolution of the core networks to IP-based NGN. In order to build the new generation of optical access networks, this solution draws on the technologies of different maturity extents such as EPON, GPON, Ethernet and xDSL, ranging from local exchange devices of various capacities to serialized user-side devices. More often than not, key mission-critical sectors such as public safety, rail, utilities & defense only get limited dedicated spectrum for their 4G / 5G networks, typically 2 x 3 or 2 x 5 MHz. Five EU operators that have been issuing joint Open RAN requirements sinceJanuary 2021 have called for vendors to implement further hardware and software decoupling to enable their vRAN software to run on either lookaside or inline accelerators, and ideally be ported between the two architectures. That approach will rely on an O-RAN Aliance interface known as AAL – Accelerator Abstraction Layer – that is still in the early stages of being specified within the Alliance’s Working Group 6, despite having been identified as an required item in the MoU’s original R1 in 2021. The aim of AAL, as it sounds, is to act as a layer between the network function (vDu, vCU) the cloud layer and underlying hardware. AAL defines hardware accelerator interface functions and protocols including configuration and management functions, procedures and operations. That includes interfacing to such critical functions as Forward Error Correction and hiPHY protocols for Massive MIMO beam forming. Vendors have been cautious in opening up some of those interfaces. As Nokia said in February 2023 to TMN, “It’s not the place where you go and tear it apart and throw all the balls in the air and reach for the best. It requires laser focus specification to open that interface. And when it is there, we will be there as well, and actually, meanwhile we will support creating that high quality specification.” (See: nokia-says-its-cloudran-can-go-on-anyran/) At the moment, vendors are choosing between the two accelerator options to implement their stacks. Nokia, for example, uses inline acceleration within its AnyRAN architecture using Marvell processors. Ericsson has been publicly committed to lookaside acceleration – which it has also termed selected function acceleration. For operators that divergence is sub-optimal because it creates a point of dependency between the vRAN and the underlying hardware. Within their Open RAN requirements Release 4, the EU Open RAN MoU operators said they “require technology and vendor agnostic solutions.”

FWA June 2024 Report: This report on the global status of the fixed wireless access (#FWA) market brings updates about the availability of FWA broadband services based on LTE and 5G; #tariff structures; service #portability; service #speeds and #device support for FWA. 🟦 In FWA broadband services, GSA has identified announced service offers from 467 operators in 188 countries and territories, and launched services from 407 operators in 176 countries and territories worldwide. 🟦 Europe and the Middle East and Africa have the highest number of operators delivering FWA services using LTE or 5G. 🟦 More than 50% of tariffs for LTE FWA are based on data volume, with speed-based structures favoured by 19% of operators. The difference is less marked with 5G FWA. 🟦 The average of the marketed maximum peak download speeds for LTE FWA was 178.6 Mbps, down from 180.5 Mbps in November 2023, based on data for 330 operators in May 2024. Advancing Direct-to-Device (D2D) Communications The telecommunications landscape is evolving rapidly, with satellite communications playing a pivotal role in enhancing global connectivity. Direct-to-device (D2D) communications, which enable devices to connect directly to satellite networks without intermediary ground stations, represent a significant advancement in this domain. The Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA) is at the forefront of this development, working closely with the GSM Association (GSMA) to explore the best ways to integrate satellite and terrestrial networks. Current Developments in D2D Communications The integration of satellites into terrestrial networks has been progressing steadily, with significant strides in developing standards for non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). With 3GPP Release 17, NTNs now support 5G and IoT services, marking a major evolution. The focus is shifting towards fully integrating satellites into the 6G framework, which promises to bring unprecedented levels of ubiquity, continuity, scalability, and resilience to global connectivity. WRC-27 Agenda Items The World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27) will address several critical agenda items that will shape the future of D2D communications: Agenda Item 1.12: This item focuses on considering additional spectrum allocations for Mobile Satellite Service (MSS), which is crucial for the growth of satellite communications. Agenda Item 1.13: This involves studying the use of terrestrial spectrum (IMT bands) for D2D communications. This approach leverages existing mobile handsets and requires partnerships with mobile network operators (MNOs). Agenda Item 1.14: Similar to 1.12, this item will also look at additional MSS spectrum allocations, emphasizing the need for more bandwidth to support the growing demand for satellite services. GSOA and GSMA Cooperation Collaboration is key to the successful integration of satellite and terrestrial networks. GSOA has signed cooperation agreements with GSMA and the European Space Agency (ESA) to advance this integration.
