🔧 IoT Development Tip: Avoiding Cloud and Network Overload 🔧 We at @Monogoto work with countless companies and developers creating IoT devices. Time and time again, we encounter a massive challenge: software design choices that unintentionally lead to server overloads and network congestion. These issues aren’t obvious at first but become critical as devices scale. One of the most common mistakes? Scheduling data updates at round timings, like every hour on the hour or at midnight. This approach may work for 100 devices, but when you scale to 10K, 50K, or even 100K devices, it creates huge problems: 1️⃣ Server Overload: Massive spikes in data reception at predictable times require excessively powerful servers to handle the peak load, increasing costs and complexity. 2️⃣ Cellular Network Congestion: For devices using cellular networks—especially Cat-M—these synchronized peaks can overwhelm the network, causing data delays, dropped packets, or even communication failures. 💡 The Solution? Randomize Your Data Update Timing 💡 It’s perfectly fine to send data every minute, 10 minutes, or every hour—just make sure each device starts its timing randomly. This simple adjustment can: Distribute traffic evenly across servers. Prevent bottlenecks in cellular networks. Save costs by optimizing server and network usage. Scaling IoT solutions is all about smart design choices.
