STgenetics® began our EcoFeed® research in 2014 at the Ohio Heifer Center with the goal of establishing a pipeline for testing for Feed Conversion Efficiency in growing dairy heifers. By combining the individual feed intake records for heifers with their genomic data, we have been able to isolate the genetic components that affect Feed Conversion Efficiency; therefore, we can make genomic predictions of other females without feed intake records with high accuracy. STgenetics® is taking action within the climate sector and EcoFeed® has been named a finalist for Innovation in Climate Action for the 2024 International Dairy Federation (IDF) Dairy Innovation Awards! 🌽🦋 Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, has become a major global threat to corn crops, and its resistance to conventional insecticides is compounding the problem. As FAW continues to wreak havoc, researchers are exploring alternative, environmentally-friendly control measures. Improving drinking #water quality by understanding the interactions between #bacteria and #fungi. This is the main objective of the #BacFunBio Project, which receives support from CEB's Intramural Funding Programme. The research focuses on the presence of #biofilms, communities of microorganisms with a high degree of organisation, in #drinking water distribution systems. Although bacteria are the dominant microbial population, filamentous fungi also appear in significant numbers, contributing to the #deterioration of this valuable resource. Understanding the mechanisms that regulate the formation and behaviour of these inter-kingdom biofilms is, therefore, fundamental to improving existing control #strategies and creating more effective alternatives that ensure water #safety. 🌿 MicrobZoo® 🍃 #Pseudomonas fluorescens is a common Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. It belongs to the Pseudomonas genus; 16S rRNA analysis as well as phylogenomic analysis has placed P. fluorescens in the P. fluorescens group within the genus, to which it lends its name. Pseudomonas fluorescens is increasingly recognized for its #biocontrol properties in #agriculture. Recent studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in controlling a variety of #plant #pathogens, including #fungi, nematodes, and bacteria. The bacterium’s ability to produce secondary metabolites, such as antibiotics and phytohormones, contributes to its #biocontrol efficacy. These metabolites not only inhibit the growth of pathogens but also induce systemic #resistance in plants, enhancing their #natural #defense #mechanisms. Moreover, the application of P. fluorescens as a biocontrol agent has been shown to be a sustainable alternative to #chemical #pesticides, promoting #environmental #health and reducing the #ecological footprint of agricultural practices. The ongoing #research in this field is focused on optimizing the use of P. fluorescens for biocontrol and understanding the underlying #mechanisms that enable it to protect crops from #diseases.
