Spotlighting each young person’s North East Youth Symposium presentations. First, we had Cameron Leslie,  on behalf of Children North East, who shared an important piece of work that they launched earlier this year. Children North East believes that social change is achieved when those who have experienced issues lead the change, and with this in mind, they created the Change Now Report (https://lnkd.in/eUKjNJEu). This report united the voices of over 35,000 children and young people into a single document. Children North East honoured what children and young people had already told them. We only need to commission the gaps! Let's put our resources into understanding and responding to what young people have already shared. Some of the recommendations included: ➡ Pupil voice to be given priority in reviewing school policy and systems, and reviews to be carried out regularly. ➡ All school staff to receive training on mental health and wellbeing, inclusion and poverty – develop opportunities for staff to reflect and build consistency throughout schools. ➡ A regional review of how bullying and racism is dealt with involving children and young people to build consistency across the North East. ➡ Recognition that secondary schools are challenging environments for neuro-diverse children and young people and a plan to address this. ➡ Emotional well-being to be prioritised and budgeted for. ➡ Equality of access to digital technology and provision of alternatives by educational establishments without access to digitalised work. ➡ Acknowledge that educational establishments are underused outside of school hours and should be made available for communities to provide activities and services for all. ➡ Awareness raising with transport providers on the importance of making children and young people feel safe and supported when they travel alone. #youthvoice #northeast #youthengagement

Day 3: Children’s Rights – A Focus on Education Every child deserves the right to an education. It is not just a fundamental right; it is a powerful catalyst for change. Education empowers children, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the world and seize opportunities. It lifts families out of poverty, breaks the cycle of disadvantage, and creates pathways to economic stability. Investing in education strengthens communities by fostering informed, engaged citizens who can contribute to societal progress. When children have access to quality education, we see increased health outcomes, reduced crime rates, and enhanced civic participation. Yet, countless barriers still exist that prevent children from accessing this vital resource. From economic challenges to geographic isolation, systemic inequalities must be addressed to ensure every child can thrive. Let us unite in our efforts to dismantle these barriers. By collaborating with educators, policymakers, and community leaders, we can create a more equitable educational system that serves all children. Low literacy is both a cause and an effect of intergenerational cycles of poverty and inequity in the U.S. To reverse this cycle, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy and Dalberg teamed up to develop a National Action Plan for Adult Literacy. The collaboration evolved to launch a unique, national collective impact initiative—the Adult Literacy and Learning Impact Network (ALL IN). Empowering Out-of-School Children: A Call to Action As some schools resumed last week and some will be resuming tomorrow I’m reminded of the power of education to transform lives. Yet, so many children in our communities remain out of school due to various circumstances—whether it’s financial constraints, lack of resources, or simply not having the right support. Every child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and unlock their potential, and that’s why I’m committed to helping out-of-school children get back into the classroom by facilitating their enrollment in schools. This mission is personal to me because I believe education is a right, not a privilege. Indeed, many children's dreams are influenced by the societies surrounding them. I remember one day I met a young student who was in his first year of secondary school at a government school. I asked him, "What would you like to become after finishing your studies?" I didn't mean to belittle anyone's profession, but his answer raised questions within me🤔. Why did he choose that profession immediately after completing his studies? Society should encourage youth through actions, including those who have received education, to inspire young people from impoverished backgrounds.
