Sales Per Square Metre is a calculation of the average revenue earned per square metre of your retail space. This KPI still is a critical measure of how well you are using your physical store space ( thus success in the physical ((brick-and-mortar)) retailing arena.) In the supermarket business it can be driven by retail basics such as a good in-stock position, smart merchandising esp around impulse products , good cross-merchandising (upweighting items per basket) and other simple retail basics like good ticketing on new items etc In reviewing last weeks annual results from Coles and Woolies, it was interesting to note their reported supermarket sales per. sqr. mtr. performance for FY 24. *Woolworths reported s.p.s.m. of $19723- up 2.4% on prior year *Coles reported s.p.s.m of $19816 - up 3.2% on prior year. Now we can always argue that the two companies might have slightly varying ways to measure sales per sqr. mtr. but if we assume they have simialr measure process , then the comparative results would indicate that Coles may be doing some of the retail basics at store level a little bit better than Woolies currently ?????? Certainly my store visits over the last financial quarter would indicate Coles standards ( in stores my geographic region) across many basic "touch points" are improving. #Retail #Supermarkets #Retailstandards #Keymeasure #Salespersquaremetre #utilisationofretailspace #ColesvsWoolies

Retail Realities: DMart’s Battle Against Online Giants Avenue Supermarts (DMart) experienced a 9% share price dip after Q2 results, mainly due to: Non-food FMCG share drop: Decreased from 20.61% to 20.15%, driven by competition from online grocery platforms like Blinkit and zepto. Slower store openings: Reduced to 6 stores in Q2 2024 from 9 in Q2 2023. Like-for-Like (LFL) growth: Fell from 9.1% to 5.5%. LFL growth indicates the growth in revenue from the sales of same store which have been operational for at least 24 months at the end of reporting period. Revenue per sq. ft.: Dropped from ₹8,648 to ₹8,582, measuring the efficiency of sales relative to retail space. It will be interesting to see how management strategizes to compete with online platforms and improve overall efficiency. #DMart #StockMarket #Retail #FMCG #QuarterlyResults
