In 2015, world leaders made a promise through the Sustainable Development Agenda—to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. Yet here we are, in 2024, with 4.5 billion people still lacking access to essential health services. Even more troubling, 2 billion people face financial hardship, and 1.3 billion are pushed into poverty each year due to health expenses. This is a human crisis. It’s a story of parents unable to afford life-saving treatment for their children, communities suffering preventable diseases, and talented individuals sidelined from contributing to society because of unmet healthcare needs. At SYNLAB Nigeria, we understand the weight of this reality. For the past 20 years, we’ve worked to expand access to quality diagnostic services in Nigeria—an essential piece of the universal health coverage puzzle. But we also recognise that this challenge cannot be solved by the private sector alone. It requires a united effort. Investing in UHC is a win for everyone. It builds healthier, more productive communities. It strengthens economies by increasing workforce participation and resilience. Most importantly, it upholds the fundamental right to health—a right every Nigerian deserves. However, achieving UHC in Nigeria demands: • Stronger partnerships with government: Policies and funding must prioritise healthcare infrastructure and access. • More robust regulation: To ensure fair pricing and high standards of care across the sector. • Community education: Because no healthcare initiative can succeed without people understanding their health rights and options. Health is wealth, not just for individuals, but for nations. Today, I join the call for all governments—ours included—to make the necessary investments in universal health coverage. Let’s create a future where no one has to choose between their health and their livelihood. SYNLAB Nigeria will continue to champion this cause, because health is not just a service—it is a foundation for equity, dignity, and opportunity. Together, we can build a Nigeria where quality healthcare is not a privilege, but a reality for all.
Nigeria as a Nation is blessed to have an ISO Diagnostic Centre such as Synlab and for the first time having a Medical Laboratory Scientist professionl as a CEO.

1wThe sad thing is that with population still on the rise without control, and no very significant attention being paid to healthcare delivery, the 4.5 billion keeps shifting upward. The least the government should do if they can't directly invest in healthcare is to encourage and create an enabling environment for private institutions to thrive. We need to see them put more of actions to words.
