Thank you to Kellington Kituku, Public Sector Lead at Amazon Web Services (AWS), for sharing your insights at the #KenyaInternetSummit2024! In this 👇 video, Kellington explores the concept of bias for action through two key decision types: One-way & Two-way Door Decisions. - One-way door decisions have lasting effects and are often hard to reverse. - Two-way door decisions are reversible and less impactful. He wants us to know that by understanding this framework better, you can guide your team more effectively, distinguishing between high-stakes decisions and those that encourage rapid iteration. I learned this from my 7 years at Amazon Web Services (AWS): Intensity adds, but consistency multiplies. At AWS, a new service doesn't start off being very big. The whole goal is to grow it by 1% week over week. That is how you create big services over time. Continuous, relentless execution. That applies to things beyond revenue. For example, Jeff Bezos used to talk about focusing on the things that don't change. Customers will always want faster delivery, better selection, and lower prices in retail. Continuous improvement on these sorts of core metrics is multiplicative over time. That applies to production operations too. Inside my AWS services, my teams would look at the tickets that came in the prior week and identify one to extinguish forever through automation. We did that week after week after week and got to a 60-70% reduction, which improved on-call experiences and provided better availability to customers. That mattered a lot in my space because we used to ticket anytime an issue happened to any database. By the time I left, there were 5 million databases, still growing 40-60% YoY. That's the takeaway I'm carrying forward into Shoreline.io: - Pick the things that will consistently matter to our customers (and their customers). - Consistent improvements provide a flywheel, so those things get better week after week (e.g., delivering 1 op-pack/week to extinguish an issue for our customer base). #SRE #cloud #devops
