This Friday, I celebrate my 20th anniversary working at CHG Healthcare. I have two friends in my department celebrating their 20th anniversaries at CHG this month too, so we had a big party at work today. We had pizza (my favorite food) for lunch and ice cream for dessert. There was a photo booth, Kahoot trivia, and speeches from our leaders expressing love and appreciation. I’m thankful that my wife and kids were all able to attend the celebration. I started working at CHG in 2004 after it acquired its nurse staffing division, landing my job through a temp agency, and I spent the first three years supporting payroll for that division. In 2007, I transferred to the Commissions team and have spent the last seventeen years in that space, supporting all of CHG’s sales and business partner divisions at one time or another. I’ve now been on the Compensation Team for the last four years. I’ve been referred to as “The Money Man” on multiple occasions, being the most favorite or least favorite person in the company, depending on the month. Some of the highlights of the last 20 years include: Earning my Certified Compensation Professional (CPP) designation in 2020 Attending Presidents Club in 2014 as a Putting People First Award winner Attending Presidents Club in 2019 as a Financial Management Core Values Award winner Attending the annual WorldatWork Total Rewards conferences starting in 2022 Going on business trips to CHG offices in Florida, Connecticut, and Oklahoma Leading the Bookworms, Survivor, and Star Wars Employee Network Groups Associating with wonderful people throughout the organization that have become like family Some of the lessons learned over the last 20 years include: It is important to build relationships throughout the company, especially within your team, department, and the divisions you support. In person contact, when available and appropriate, adds value. I can be authentic, and I can be myself. Those around me know that I’m quick with a good dad joke. I know my team has my back because of the vulnerability-based trust we’ve established over the years. It’s okay to make mistakes. I’ve made many mistakes over my career, and as I’ve owned them and have learned from them, I continue to grow. If I don’t see eye to eye with someone, it could be my fault, so it’s okay to apologize. There are lots of people out there that are smarter than me or better than me at particular skills, including excel, so it’s important to partner with those people and leverage their skills and abilities for mutual success. It is important to work for a company and in an industry that you believe in and support. CHG’s mission and purpose, in addition to its people-focused culture has been key to my staying. Here’s to many more wonderful years working at CHG!
