It's about playing the long-game, understanding the vision, and aligning with the company's trajectory over the next 2, 3, 5 years in regards to talent. What's the vision? Where are we taking the company 2, 3, 5 years? What skills do we need? How can we bridge the skill-gaps or who should we prepare for future leadership roles? Do we need to look external? Who are we competing with for top talent and skills? So much can be done when TA is brought to the table to assist with the recruitment strategy. I found this to be a very thought-provoking article. I think everyone who has ever been in any talent acquisition role has felt like an afterthought in an organization. For too long TA teams are been viewed as cost center that needs to make cuts yet still pull a rabbit out of a hat and find that elusive "right fit". We have mostly been the "order takers" whose job it is to find the bodies, fill the open positions, and that's about it. Instead, while 58% of companies feel that skills shortages are significantly impacting their businesses, TA teams (and more broadly, the entire HR function) need to be viewed as strategic partners to the business and should have a seat at the table when major decisions are made. We can quickly recognize talent - both internally and externally - and align that talent to not only meet today's needs but tomorrow's needs as well. Are we giving hiring/ recruiting the right attention it deserves? Many organisations often view hiring as simply ‘filling the role’, neglecting the importance of the outcomes. The urgency to fill the role compromises the need for a quality hire. Similar to a supply chain, the quality of the workforce depends on who flows through the channel. Hiring individuals with the right technical and soft skills, motivations and values that aligns with the organisation and role significantly impacts workforce quality. Effective hiring shortens development time and costs, contributing to higher work productivity in a faster rate at reduced costs. Unfortunately biases and noises permeate in the hiring system, leaving many organisation unclear where things went wrong. An organisation’s ability to execute on its talent strategy hinges on its workforce. It’s a crucial equation we cannot miss. Just as any ingredient affects how the cake turns out, every aspect of hiring influences an organisation’s ability to build/rebuild its workforce. There is no short cuts.
