Democracy, Race, Policy, and Philanthropy: what do these big ideas mean for all of us in the social impact sector? Keecha Harris, DrPH, RD facilitated a critical conversation at Philanthropy Southeast's April CEO Forum to examine our common history, courageously change our practices, and learn from each other to more effectively support the communities we serve. Thank you Philanthropy Southeast for including this conversation at your day-long convening! If you’re ready to be part of this movement moment, begin by considering … ✏️ What is your organization’s risk tolerance in supporting racial equity in the current environment? ✏️ What internal messaging framing can you use to reassure your staff of your commitment to racial equity? ✏️ What does legal support look like for your organization in general? What are your grantees facing? To what extent are you prepared to support them? Could your foundation, corporation, or government organization benefit from support in grappling with these questions? Reach out to us and start the conversation. #RacialEquity #ConsultingFirm #SystemsChange #Philanthropy #SCOTUS

Yesterday's summit was a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of place-based philanthropy. Dr. Ruha Benjamin's compelling blend of academic and artistic expression—so resonant with the experiences of many—and the hands-on strategies discussed were both exhilarating and cathartic. Seeing our community come together to tackle these critical issues gives me hope that what we're building here can be a model for other markets. Equitable compensation and funding disparities are challenges that hit close to home for me, having witnessed and navigated these issues in various forms throughout my career. These are not just local problems but systemic issues plaguing our entire industry. I want to give a huge shoutout to The Raymond John Wean Foundation for such and engaging activation and for a board that is willing to stand in solidarity with a bold vision that can change the landscape of this work. I also want to give tremendous kudos to Jennifer Roller. Your diligence and courageous tenacity a treasure to our community and to the field. I’m encouraged by the commitment I saw yesterday to not only acknowledge these inequities but to actively work toward solutions. This work is essential, and it’s heartening to see so many passionate, dedicated individuals rolling up their sleeves to make a difference. Together, we can create a more just and equitable sector for all. #Philanthropy #EquityInAction #PlaceBasedPhilanthropy #CommunityImpact #WeanSummit75

#WeekendWatch from the ever wonderful Alliance magazine on Philanthropy and the Common Good: https://lnkd.in/emeumvms The atomisation of society, an economy based on competition and growing distrust of politics and of institutions in general: these are some of the factors that have led to a diminished commitment to the common good (broadly, anything that benefits and is shared by all members of a given community). Yet, thus broadly understood, pursuit of the common good should be a necessary step in producing more equitable societies and a planet that continues to be habitable. But the devil is in the detail. There is more disagreement than agreement about what comprises the common good. Questions we will explore in the webinar include: Is the common good any more than an abstraction? - Who defines it? - Whose responsibility is it to secure it and, more particularly for today’s discussion, what role does philanthropy have in revivifying the notion and helping to secure its various elements, especially where philanthropy itself is one of the institutions facing scepticism? - Can philanthropy’s commitment to this issue help to restore its legitimacy and the necessary behaviour to become a societal norm for the future? Featuring: Bruce Sievers Haas Center for Public Service Hafsat Abiola President, Women in Africa Dorothy Chan Head of Philanthropy Services and Advisory, HSBC

“The ultimate work of trust-based philanthropy is to build a democracy that acknowledges the role of structural racism in the creation of wealth in the United States. One where decision-making takes place in communities rather than behind foundation doors. A democracy that is a daily practice emphasizing the connections between our work and the solutions that collaboration makes possible. Like democracy, trust-based philanthropy is strengthened through practice. Its impact only grows when it’s implemented collectively.” Building a Multiracial Democracy (SSIR)

❝While we may have dodged the bullet of anti-democratic thinking for now, it will only have been the chronical of a death foretold if we don’t renew trust and strengthen the social contract at the heart of democracy.❞ As trust in political institutions teeters on the edge and the Sustainable Development Goals seem to slip beyond our reach, what role can philanthropy play in reinvigorating our outdated social contract? Indeed, if policymakers can partner with the philanthropic sector, it could be the catalyst needed to bring about a Renewed Social Contract. But, in tandem with increased governmental engagement, the sector must undergo self-transformation. Delphine Moralis, Chief Executive Officer at Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association, offers her unique expertise and insight in this Critical Thinking article examining philanthropy’s potential to be a changemaker. ⤵ Read more below. #CriticalThinking #RenewedSocialContract #Philanthropy

Innovation, collaboration, and excellence are key to tackling systemic issues and advancing social change. On this week's #MissionForward episode, we dig deep with The Chronicle of Philanthropy's Stacy Palmer, Interfaith America 's Eboo Patel, and JustFund's Iara Peng to understand the true nature of social change. Here are our top takeaways: 1️⃣ Nonprofits can work to advance democracy and fight polarization by modeling respect, cooperation, and understanding across differences. 2️⃣ Philanthropy should embrace long-term thinking and take risks on innovative, transformative ideas. 3️⃣ Funders can support systemic change by funding bold, creative solutions and not being afraid of initial failures. Investing in organizations led by those with firsthand experience in the justice system isn't just giving back—it's a strategic move towards genuine change. The unique perspectives of formerly incarcerated leaders drive solutions that resonate deeply within communities, fostering environments where healing and systemic reform go hand in hand.
