I had the pleasure to meet Francesca in person a few weeks ago at Serviceplan Group’s Innovation Day. Many might know her from her work as Chief Digital and Innovation Officer for the City of #Barcelona from 2015-2019. She left her mark by…. 👉 leading the smart city Agenda and by co-founding the Cities Coalition for Digital Rights. 👉 pioneering a digital platform (Decidim) to involve citizens at all stages of local government decision-making, from proposing ideas to budgeting. 👉 being a strong advocate for municipal technical sovereignty and proclaiming: the data belongs to the people. Some named her 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗮’𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮: ‘𝘞𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 — 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥𝘴, 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦 — 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩. 𝘐𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘢.’ (𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘢 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘢) But Francesca Bria’s impact goes well beyond. 🚀 She serves as Senior Adviser to the United Nation (UN-Habitat) on digital cities and digital rights, launching the People-focused smart cities programme at the World Urban Forum. 🚀 On a European level she is – among others - leading the #DECODE project on data sovereignty in Europe and is a member of the EC President Ursula von der Leyen's High level Roundtable for The New European Bauhaus. 💥💥💥 Thank you, dear Francesca, for inspiring us with your clear vision of a 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 – focusing on data sovereignty and digital democracy that serves first the people and not the big tech companies. 💥💥💥 𝘗.𝘚. 💡 Did you know that according to estimates, every 5th person cannot find a suitable footpath with conventional digital maps? ⚡️ With the demographic development in Switzerland, this will massively worsen in the coming years. #smartcities #futurecities #inclusivecities 💪 The two projects supported by Innosuisse Innovation Booster Swiss Smart Cities, #Bootis by Association Slowlution and #ZüriAct by the Universität Zürich and the Stadt Zürich, supported by Intersections, aim to change that. They have tackled the issue of barrier-free sidewalks with different approaches. The pilot projects with Coach Amir Sahi (thank you 🙏) are completed, but the open collaboration has only just begun. 👩🍳👨🍳👩🍳 Many cooks spoil the broth? Not at all! In three steps, we will together create a socially relevant dish! 🍅🥒🥔 Step 1: Gather different ingredients. Those affected, associations, universities, authorities, businesses, and solution providers understand the problem from different perspectives. 🥘 Step 2: Mix and taste the ingredients together. Last week, we all met for a #Roundtable to share our visions, approaches, and challenges. We also identified who else should join the table. 🍜 Step 3: Let simmer and serve. The meeting marks the start of actively promoting an inclusive ecosystem. Together, we want to advance our ambition of an inclusive barrier-free map. 🚀 Many thanks to the participants for sharing and your commitment to this relevant issue! I am so very honored to be awarded the Hedy Lamarr Prize 2024 🎉 by the City of Vienna, DigitalCity.Wien and UIV Urban Innovation Vienna! My deepest thanks to the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF) for the nomination. I had a fantastic time at the award ceremony yesterday at the Technical Museum Vienna! A big thank you to DigitalCity.Wien for organizing such an amazing event as part of the #DiDays24. This award recognizes female scientists for their outstanding contributions to the field of information technology. While we've made progress in addressing diversity issues, there's still a long road ahead. We need to consider diversity not only in how we work and how we incentivize, but also in whom we include in our research, ensuring that technology benefits as many people as possible. My research focuses on the emerging field of Human Data Interaction. This means I explore how people interact with, experience, and understand data. Why data? Because data act as an interface, a window into how we perceive the world. In my work, I try to make the decisions that happen at every stage of working with data more transparent—from the questions we ask, to how we collect, document, and make data available, all the way to how we analyze, reuse, and communicate about data. My aim is to study how people make sense of data, find ways to explain data and models to diverse audiences and build tools that support these efforts. #womeninscience #hedilamarr

Science, technology, and innovation, and digital cooperation: the urban opportunity. In an age of rapid digital transformation, urbanization and cities are pivotal in shaping global outcomes on technology and data governance. As frontline implementers of digital solutions, local governments have a leading role to ensure that technology drives sustainable and inclusive development while narrowing the digital divide in urban settings. The development of the first international guidelines on people-centred smart cities by UN-Habitat will serve as a global benchmark to ensure that digital technology improves lives for over 4 billion people now living in cities. 🌆📲 #Tech4Good #2024UNCSC
