🌍 🏘️ Brazil's 2022 Census: What do the new population data reveal? 📊 16.4 million people live in 12,348 favelas and urban communities in Brazil — a number that may seem alarming at first glance, considering that in 2010 the Census reported 11.4 million people living in 6,329 favelas. However, this increase must be understood within a broader context, including improvements in mapping and data collection. 🔍 Why is this important? More accurate data are essential for designing effective public policies that ensure adequate housing, social inclusion, and sustainable development, aligned with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and the New Urban Agenda. 💡 Additionally, the 2022 Census highlights how improvements in data collection and visibility help address social inequalities and promote a fairer future for these communities. 💬 What has changed? 🔹 The shift from the term “subnormal agglomerations” to “favelas and urban communities,” which also resulted in changes to the criteria used to identify and classify these territories; 🔹 Updates to Territorial Bases; 🔹 Updated mapping and identification of previously unrecorded areas; 🔹 The separation of conurbated areas into distinct localities with unique names; 🔹 The “segregation of mixed areas,” where informal and formal areas were previously combined; 🔹 Greater involvement of local leaders and social organizations in the process. Having more accurate data is critical to ensuring that no one — and no territory — is left behind! #SDG11 #SustainableDevelopment #NewUrbanAgenda #PublicPolicies #UrbanCommunities

Creating socially and environmentally sustainable cities and communities
About us
UN-Habitat is the United Nations entity responsible for developing urban policies and translating them into action to create sustainable cities and communities. Cities are facing unprecedented demographic, environmental, economic, and social challenges. There has been a phenomenal shift towards urbanization, with half of the world's population living in cities. By 2050, almost 70 per cent of the population will reside in cities. This urban growth will be happening mainly in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In the absence of effective urban planning, the consequences of this rapid urbanization will be dramatic. Urban policies need to change to turn this rapid urban growth into opportunities to create a better quality of life for people. UN-Habitat is at the helm of this change. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to address the issues of urban growth and sustainable urban development.

The circular economy is not just about recycling. It’s an opportunity to rethink entire systems in our cities. Cities are growing, fast. And if we’re not careful, they’ll deplete resources faster than we can replenish them. Going circular means going beyond waste management to work across all sectors: 🔄 Rethinking products (e.g. to optimize for longevity) 🔄 Reducing consumption 🔄 Reusing materials across industries (construction, mobility, food, energy) Most of all, procurement is a powerful tool for cities to boost the adoption of circularity by local businesses. What is your advice to help cities become more circular?

National climate strategies must reflect the realities of urban life. Cities contribute over 70% of global emissions while facing severe climate impacts. To safeguard vulnerable communities and ensure sustainable futures, we need targeted urban strategies in NDCs 3.0. Let’s make sure every plan resonates locally. The third update of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs 3.0) are due by Feb 2025. This is our chance to align with a 1.5°C temperature goal and create sustainable pathways for action by phasing out fossil fuels.

Today, as we mark #InternationalMigrantsDay, we recognize the transformative power of migration in shaping cities and communities worldwide. Migrants bring diversity, skills, and resilience that enrich #urban environments, making them hubs of cultural exchange and economic growth. At UN-Habitat, we believe inclusive planning is essential to ensuring that everyone regardless of their background has access to opportunities, #housing, and public services that foster dignity and empowerment. Let us harness #migration as a force for positive change. via IOM - UN Migration

What’s the cost of inaction? For Malawi, it’s lives lost, health systems collapsed, and an unliveable future. From devastating floods to severe droughts, extreme weather is destroying lives, livelihoods, and health systems in one of the world's most vulnerable nations. Cyclone Freddy alone claimed 600+ lives and led to a year-long cholera outbreak that killed over 1,700 people. Malaria, malnutrition, and displacement add to the crisis. Despite contributing the least to global emissions, countries like Malawi are paying the highest price. Malawi's health minister calls for urgent global action: investment in climate-resilient health systems, data digitization, and financing for vulnerable nations.
