What is the role of a Non-Executive Director? When Steve Orenstein called late in the afternoon before Zoom2u's 10 year anniversary function asking me to MC, as our Chair was unwell and could no longer attend, I said, "Yes!". It was a wonderful experience, celebrating how far the company has come from Steve sketching out a business plan on a cafe napkin after a poor delivery experience, and then founding the company, to listing on the ASX, and expanding globally. As a Non-Executive Director, it is important for me to know and understand our people and our customers. Research shows that a sense of connection is one of the most important factors in discretionary effort, retention outcomes, and prosocial behaviours that drive organisational effectiveness. It was a privilege to meet and speak with customers, see investors, to embrace overseas based team members whom I have only ever met over Zoom, and to meet and re-connect with the families of staff members that could attend. It was also fabulous to meet Steve's young daughter whom I am confident will be the perfect successor to our CEO when the time comes. 2dAs a proud Zoom2u investor since the early rounds, it's awesome to know the board is helped by a director of your experience / wisdom / kindness. I think there's a few startup CEO potentials in your kids as well!
