Every journey begins with a single step, and sometimes, that step leads us to unexpected places. This Saturday, as I look back on the past week, I want to share a moment that didn't just inspire me—it set a direction for the entire year. On January 2nd, I walked into JIZ Company on a mission to green our community in Kakuma, a battlefront against the advancing desert. I didn't just collect any trees; I gathered future protectors for our compound. These saplings are beacons of hope, symbols of growth, and pillars of resilience, ready to carve out a haven of shade in our desert. This visit underscored a powerful truth: even the smallest actions can sculpt our environment. It proved we can push back against desertification with commitment and hard work. But this mission extends beyond planting trees. It's about building a future where we live in harmony with nature, even under the harshest conditions. It's about creating a legacy that will outlive us, for generations to tread this earth after we're gone. Reflecting on this week fills me with gratitude for the learned lessons and the path forward. We must plant the trees in our communities. Planting trees in Balochistan carries immense benefits for both the environment and local communities. Trees act as a natural shield against desertification, helping to combat soil erosion and maintain ecological balance in this arid region. Additionally, they contribute to improved air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. The shade provided by trees helps regulate temperatures, offering relief in the scorching heat. Moreover, tree planting initiatives can create employment opportunities and enhance biodiversity, fostering a more sustainable and resilient ecosystem. Recognizing these benefits, it becomes imperative to prioritize and promote extensive tree planting efforts in Balochistan for a healthier environment and improved quality of life.

19 and 20 June, UNITAR-SCYCLE is organising the first national e-waste forum in Dushanbe Tajikistan together with the national government. Although 50 percent of the Tajik population lives under 3 US dollar a day, e-waste generation is already reaching 1.4 kg/inhabitant per year and projected to grow rapidly. If nothing is done all of this is managed by informal sector or simply dumped at landfills. See below of a picture of one of the random walks I made to a random neighborhood in Dushanbe. Fourty percent of weight of ewaste are small equipment which are cheap and most can afford but don’t last and are not easily repairable. Temperature exchange equipment such as fridges and air conditioners are second in weight and comprise of 28 percent. You find these a lot in small shops, businesses and households as they represent an important step in development as it’s a very hot climate. Virunga National Park celebrates its centenary next year (it's the oldest national park in Africa, designated in 1925). In the run up authorities are desperately trying 'lighthouse solutions', Davos' catchphrase for beacon projects that aid a particularly vulnerable conservation area. Chief among them is the hydroelectric initiative, aimed at replacing the devastating charcoal industry. Charcoal is vital for poor communities needing both fuel and revenue. A string of generators have been built, managed by local village engineers, trained and fully responsible for the roll out. It's already having a major positive effect, with new agriculture and green businesses benefitting. The challenges for Virunga are huge though; the civil war is flaring up again, climate change is very real and poaching remains a concern. Telling the story of our Ranipura pond in Baran. This pond was built thanks to the generous support of The Ten and Lakemore Partners . Around the pond and across the village 5,000 trees were planted, the first steps towards restoring the forest cover which once thrived here. In September 2024 this pond is full and overflowing - having collected 27,000m3 of water......a resource that is life changing for the community. This water will transform the village – sustaining agriculture, providing food, and preventing the need for migration. We’re truly amazed by the work of The Flow Partnership and the powerful impact these ponds are having across the region. And this is just the beginning. As we continue to build and restore more water bodies throughout the basin, we envision even greater transformations – linking these lifelines to multiply their impact for the people and the environment.
