Virunga National Park celebrates its centenary next year (it's the oldest national park in Africa, designated in 1925). In the run up authorities are desperately trying 'lighthouse solutions', Davos' catchphrase for beacon projects that aid a particularly vulnerable conservation area. Chief among them is the hydroelectric initiative, aimed at replacing the devastating charcoal industry. Charcoal is vital for poor communities needing both fuel and revenue. A string of generators have been built, managed by local village engineers, trained and fully responsible for the roll out. It's already having a major positive effect, with new agriculture and green businesses benefitting. The challenges for Virunga are huge though; the civil war is flaring up again, climate change is very real and poaching remains a concern.
