🚨 Big Changes Ahead for AR Creators 🚨 Meta Platforms just announced that they’ll be shutting down their augmented reality (AR) studio, Meta Spark, on January 14, 2025. This tool has been vital for third-party creators, helping bring unique AR effects to Instagram and Facebook through custom filters, masks, and 3D objects. But now, Meta is shifting gears and focusing on emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the metaverse. What does this mean? All third-party AR effects will no longer be supported after this date. If you’re running AR campaigns, ensure they wrap up before January 14, 2025! Meta will continue to offer first-party AR effects on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, while investing in AI-driven experiences and developing new products, like AR glasses. This decision has left many creators in the AR space searching for alternatives. Some are already eyeing Snap’s Lens Studio or Unity for their next AR project. What do you think? Will this shift to AI and the metaverse open up new creative opportunities? Or will it be a loss for the AR community? #Meta #AR #AI #MetaSpark #DigitalInnovation #FutureOfTech #AugmentedReality #Creators

The results are in: The metaverse hype is over. I remember running around at AWE a few weeks after Facebook renamed itself to Meta, and the hype kicked into overdrive. But for me at least, it always smelled like a hype, especially the VR leaning version of the metaverse that most people think of. Three years later, we can confidently say its over. From Adweek's post-mortem: “The initial hype wasn’t backed by fully functional tech, and companies entered without a clear, long-term strategy, leading to half-baked experiences that lost consumer interest quickly,” said Jason Snyder, chief technology officer at creative agency Momentum Worldwide. This quote nails it because it identifies two key aspects that are needed to make a new engagement platform take off: technology and strategic vision. I am much more invested in Augmented Reality (AR), and here the entry-stage technology is much more mature and widely distributed, unlike for VR-leaning metaverses. At the same time, the next phase of AR tech is making progress fast than I anticipated: Meta's recently unveiled Orion glasses seem like a quantum leap. The other side -- strategic vision -- still seems to be lacking behind, it seems to me. Yes, we have very powerful tools that can create off-the-shelf face lenses, but how brands will make sense of emerging tech infrastructures (e.g., spatial AR, generative AR, etc) is little understood. That's a huge opportunity to get clever and get ahead for businesses and college grads. Fast Company has written a very long article on Meta Orion glasses. There are some interesting tidbits in it, like that from now till when Meta AR glasses will ship, things will be "from 33% to 50% thinner than what they’re demonstrating today", or that Meta doesn't want AR to be like in Keiichi Matsuda's HyperReality video. A good read for the weekend. #AugmentedReality #SpatialComputing #Meta #innovation #smartglasses https://lnkd.in/dNkV6jdY

“We’re all haunted by the Hyper Reality video,” says Meta VP in Fast Company ‘s hands-on preview of upcoming AR glasses Orion. But the article doesn’t talk about business models, incentives, surveillance /manipulation or the privacy of users or bystanders. These are the real horrors of HYPER-REALITY, and are still very much a part of Meta’s DNA. You can’t fix surveillance capitalism by improving its UX. https://lnkd.in/eDCu3Rhi

Ooof. Matsuda: “You can’t fix surveillance capitalism by improving its UX.” In response to Meta VP quoted as saying “We’re all haunted by [Matsuda’s] HYPER-REALITY video… Every [AR] pixel that we light up should be worth its weight in gold.” Matsuda says, “business models, incentives, surveillance /manipulation or the privacy of users or bystanders. These are the real horrors of HYPER-REALITY, and are still very much a part of Meta’s DNA.”

Meta always frames privacy as an issue about what people share with each other, e.g., letting AR users opt-in to sharing an AR name tag with other Orion wearers. But Meta always downplays that the real privacy issues is what people share with Meta, which few people truly can comprehend.

In late September, Meta captivated the tech community with its prototype #AR glasses, #Orion, promising a consumer-friendly way to blend digital content with our physical world. However, as Mariana O. writes, this development comes with significant red flags. Meta's business model, which relies on the collection of users' personal data for targeted advertisements, raises concerns about the potential misuse of sensitive personal information gathered by these glasses. Furthermore, the AI features may blur the line between assistance and manipulation. As we explore advancements in #metaverse tech, let’s remain vigilant — Meta has yet to prove it deserves our trust. #AugmentedReality #PrivacyMatters #TechEthics Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ePjwZ_2b
